The County was
formed in 1836 from lands ceded by the Cherokee Indians under the
Treaty of New Echota. It is named for Col. Edward
Bradley, who served in the War of 1812
and was a friend of Andrew Jackson. Cleveland, the County Seat,
is named for Col. Benjamin
Cleveland, one of the heroes of
King's Mountain (1780).
The land that was
to become Bradley County was chosen as the site for the Cherokee Indian
Agency.
It was established at Charleston in 1819. Return
J. Meigs, known as White
Eagle to the Indians,
was the first Indian Agent to serve at this location.
