OUR COMRADES IN REUNION.
By W. W. SLOAN, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Well, comrades, once again we've met
And clasped each other's friendly hand
And seen each other eye to eye
Ere passing to the silent land.
These forty years have left their trace
Your manly form old Time has bent;
His sign is on your soldier face,
And many a one to his home he's sent.
Let's sit down here and recall the past,
As round our camp fire we'd sit at night
And pass the hours in tale and song
Sometimes until the morning light.
We yearned for firesides far away
And for each form we held so dear.
Alas! alas! how these have changed!
Lets brush away the falling tear.

The mother dear who watched her boy
As he left his home for the field of strife
And prayed that God in his own good way
Would keep and shield and spare his life
Has long since gone to her quiet home
Away beyond the stars so bright;
And while he lives 'mid gathering gloom,
She waits for him where comes no night.
The father and the sisters dear
And another one who often came
Their smiles will greet us here no more;
On the churchyard stone you'll read their name.
Those years with many a hardship fraught
Were not unmixed with pleasure's cup;
And many a joyous hour we knew,
As well did bitter sorrow sup.

And here tonight we hear them sing
Who sang in days of dire distress;
Their songs are much the same as when
Our soldiers found no time for rest.
Their songs recall our hard camp life
When on the front we met the foe
And made the fight for the dear old South.
That time's now forty years ago.

Here's my hand with parting prayer
That all the remaining days you live
May be filled with the best of our country's store
And all the good our God can give;
That when you strike your test down here
You'll pitch it on the heavenly shore,
Where foes ne'er meet and friends ne'er part,
And you're safe from harm for evermore.
