Although Tennessee was a Confederate State,
she provided men to both sides of the war. An estimated 187,000 Tennesseans
served in the Confederate Army while 51,000 Tennesseans served in the Union
Army.
The Union named its armies after major rivers
while the Confederates named their armies after states. As a result, during the
war, the Union had an army called "Army of the
Tennessee" while the Confederates had an army called "Army of
Tennessee."
After Virginia, Tennessee had the highest numbers of
battles fought within her borders. Of the ten costliest battles of the Civil War,
the Battle of Stones River, Battle of Shiloh, and the Battle of Fort Donelson ranked
8th, 9th, and 10th, respectiveley.
