Abstract of Information available in the Service Records:
Samuel M. Payne, private, Co.E 8th TN CAV. commanded by Col. S.K.N.PATTON was enrolled in the service of the United States at Sneedville, TN on the 10th day of October 1863 and mustered therein at Camp Nelson in the state of Kentucky on the 30th day of December 1863, to serve for the period of three years and was honorably discharged at Knoxville in the state of Tennessee on or about the 20th day of June 1865, upon Surgeons Certificates of disability. Samuel M. Payne was, whilst in the line of duty, wounded in battle at Saulisbury, NC on or about the 12th day of April 1865 and was discharged by reason of these wounds. The wound is of the following character, namely: Musket shot through the right arm near the arm pit and incurred from cause as follows: While in battle at Saulisbury and while in close engagement with the enemy,the said soldier received said wound while in the line of duty and in active engagement with the enemy. At the time of enlistment, said soldier was in good and sound health, and in no way incapacited from performing military duty, and only became disabled in the performance therof, at the time, under the circumstances, and from the cause stated, which resulted in his discharge.
