The organization of the First Tennessee Infantry was made by Colonel R. K. Byrd, at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky, in August, 1861. This regiment did distinguished service in the war, and fought with great gallantry at the memorable battle of Mill Springs, Ky., where General Felix K. Zolliffer and other leading citizens of Tennessee perished on the rebel side, and in which Major-General Geo. H. Thomas won the first of that series of splendid victories, ending with the battle of Nashville, which contributed so largely to the overthrow of the rebellion. This regiment was in the expedition into North-Western Virginia, and subsequently entered East Tennessee, under Major-General Burnside. While at Cumberland Gap, a detachment of this and the Second Regiment, consisting of sixty-nine men, led by Captain Myers and Lieutenant Rogers, captured an important outpost of the rebels without the loss of a man. For this exploit, a complimentary order was read on dress parade, by order of General Morgan, Sept. 1, 1862.
