Sickness and Death

Monroe Tomb

James Monroe (1758-1831) was reburied at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond Virginia. It had taken 27 years to move his remains back to his native state. He had died of tuberculosis in New York and had been interned there in New York Marble Cemetery, then moved to New York City Marble Cemetery. Finally in July 1858, the body of James Monroe was escorted on the steamer Jamestown from New York City to be reburied in Hollywood.
The stately shelter over the tomb bears little resemblance to a humble gravehouse, yet it serves the same function as those old time gravehouses.
