About 1885 the mussels which grew plentifully in the Caney Fork were discovered to be producers of valuable pearls.
From then until about 1915, Smithville was a leading fresh-water pearl market, with some pearls bringing over $1000
each. One of the pearl traders was Mr. Jim Christian, pictured here around 1905 in New Orleans with pearl buyers
on each side. Among other traders were Mr. Christian's uncle, John Windham; his father-in-law, John Conger; and
his brother-in-law, Alvin Conger.
