| A knowledge of the various nicknames can
help us better identify our ancestors. I have NOT included some of the more OBVIOUS ones in
this list. Remember, there can be an Eliza and an Elizabeth in the same family. Also, it is not
uncommon to find two children with the same name. Sometimes a child dies and another child is
given their name. There may also be a child with the same name by the different wives. Some
nicknames may be clues to a name by which the person was not commonly known. Some of
the names might have been given at birth and are not nicknames. PLEASE DO NOT SEND "pet

Uletha Hudman wants to know if anyone has heard
of the name 'Uletha.'
Lena would like to know from what name "Dink"
derives. The only one I have heard of was David.
Sherrywould like to know what the nicknames
"Sina" and "Jettie" stand for. I have seen Sina, Sena also as Signa and Sinah. See also
"Euphrosina" (Ger).
Lori would like to know if the masculine name "Merce"
or the feminine name "Mecie" has shown up in anyone's research?
Would like to know what the name Dincy stands
for. I suggested it could be Obedience. Any other suggestions?
| Identifying the children in a family may be
somewhat easier if the parents had a naming tradition. It is often an Irish practice and may not
always be strictly followed. Some communities reflect a practice of having multiple names
for family members.
2nd son named after the Mother's father 3rd son named after the Father 4th son named after the Father's oldest brother
Oldest daughter named after the Mother's mother
2nd wife's oldest daughter named after the first wife, using her full name
