African American History and Genealogy

Giles County’s “colored” population (as it was then termed) grew rapidly between the years 1820 and 1860: from 3,261 slaves and 25 free colored in 1820 to 10,848 slaves and 23 free colored in 1860, a total of 10,871 compared to 19,675 whites. Following the Civil War, the number of coloreds was 12,738 compared to 19,675 whites in 1870 and 14,189 coloreds and 21,824 whites in 1880. (United States Historical Census Data Browser)
