Black Biographies

Isaac N. BLACK, M.D. [of Perry County, Tennessee] was the son of Isaac N. and Susan A. (Williamson ) Black who were born in Virginia. They married in Giles County, TN where they were early settlers. Dr. Black's father was a farmer and died in 1844. His widow then married Joel B. Drake and bore him 4 children. She died in Lawrence County in 1861. Dr. Black made his home with his paternal grandmother until the war when he enlisted in the 3rd TN Confederate Infantry and served until the close of the war. He was promoted to Lt. in 1862 and participated in the battles of Fort Donelson, Chickasaw Bayou, Port Hudson, Raymond, Jackson, Chickamauga (wounded), Resaca (wounded), Franklin (wounded), and Bentonville (wounded). In 1869 he graduated at the University of Nashville and began to practice medicine in Linden. May 5, 1870, he married Julia M. Brashear, a daughter of Thomas Brashear. Notes: The 1850 Giles County Census includes Joel B. DRAKE in District 13, HH 31-31, age 35, OH, and Susan A. DRAKE, age 29, VA. Also in the HH (among others) is Isaac N. BLACK, age 10, TN.
