RICHARD BROWN, Giles County, Private, South Carolina Line, $73.33 Annual Allowance, $Amount Rec'd, Jan 9, 1834 Pension Started, Age 78 (1835 Rolls).
Richard BROWN was born 31 May 1756 in Pennsylvania, died 28 Oct 1839, probably in Giles County. He resided in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina by the time of his enlistment for service in the Revolutionary War, but was in York County, South Carolina by 2 May 1797 when he married Sarah (last name not given). Richard BROWN applied for his pension on 20 Aug 1832 in Giles County (age 76), declaring that he had moved to Williamson County, Tennessee in 1804, and thence to Giles in 1812. On 23 Sept 1848 his widow, Sarah "Sallie" BROWN, age 74, made application for benefits in Giles County. She declared that their children were Joseph Jordon, born 5 Apr 1798, John Starr, born 16 Dec 1801, Tenes Milton, born 7 Apr 1804, Richard Hervey, born 26 Jun 1808, Sally Elize, born 19 Jun 1815, and James Medison [Madison?], born 15 Jul 1817 (Rev War Pension File W1545). No Richard BROWN is on the 1812 Giles County Census. The 1820 census has not yet been checked, but a Richard BROWN was on the 1830 Giles County, Tennessee Census, p. 204, 70-80 years of age with a female, age 60-70, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 20-30, and 1 female 15-20. He was probably the Richard BROWN with 300 acres and no polls (due to his age) on the 1836 Giles County Tax List, District 17. His widow, Sarah BROWN, age 60-70, is listed on the 1840 Giles County Census, p. 127, immediately above that of their son, John S. BROWN.
