John Everly
Giles County, Tennessean
in the Revolutionary War

A Joint Project of
Giles County, TNGenWeb and
Tennesseans in the Revolutionary War

JOHN EVERLY first enlisted in the service of the Revolutionary War in Washington County, Maryland, and then in nearby Frederick County, Virginia. He applied for his pension on 22 Oct 1839 in Giles County, declaring that he had resided in Federick County, Va for nine or ten years after his discharge, then moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia for two or three years, then to Giles County, Tennessee (Rev War Pension File R3405). He does not state the year that he came to Giles County, and is not on the 1812 Giles County Tax list. The 1820 Tennessee census index shows one EVERLY, George, of Williamson County, but in 1830, a George EVERLY is on the Giles County Census, p. 134, the only EVERLY listed in the county, and with no elderly male in his household (a male, age 70-80, is in the adjacent household of William GIDEON, which may be significant???). Neither George or John EVERLY are found on the 1836 Giles County Tax list, but John EVERLY, age 74 (born ca 1766), military pensioner, appears in the household of George EVERLY on the 1840 Giles County, Tennessee Census, p. 98.

John apparently experienced problems with his pension application:

(Journal of the House of Representatives of the United States, 1789-1873, Wednesday, December 23, 1840, p. 97, American Memories Collection, Library of Congress)
