Timothy Ezell
Giles County, Tennessean
in the Revolutionary War

A Joint Project of
Giles County, TNGenWeb and
Tennesseans in the Revolutionary War

TIMOTHY EZELL enlisted in the Revolutionary War service in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina, and was residing in Giles County by 1807 or 1808 according to Goodspeeds' History of Giles County, which states that "Timothy Ezell, Mike Ezell and William Ezell settled in the neighborhood of Cross Waters." Goodspeeds also states that "Probably the first church organization in Giles County was the Baptist Church at Cross Water, which was organized in 1808 by the Buchanans, Ezells and other settlers of that neighborhood. A log meeting-house was erected in 1809, which stood for a number of years, until torn down and a new and more commodious one was built, which was given the name of Old Zion." 1812 Giles County, Tennessee Tax List. He applied for his pension on 17 Jun 1818 in Giles County, at which time, his daughter, Sarah EDWARDS was also living in the county (with her husband, not named). By 1820, however, Timothy EZELL, age 80, and wife, age 68 (not named), were residing in Lincoln County, Tennessee, "the part that was formerly in Giles County, Tennessee." In 1835, the Tennessee Rolls showed Timothy EZELL, Private, North Carolina Continental Line, in Giles County with a $96.00 annual allowance, $932.53 having been received since Apr 19, 1819 when his pension started, at which time he was 78 years of age.

Note: It is not known what Timothy meant by a part of Lincoln that was formerly in Giles County as there are no known annexations between these two counties. The 1820 Tennessee Census Index shows Micajah, Timothy and William EZELL in Giles County, all on page 15, and Timothy EZEL [sic] on p. 18 of the Lincoln County census (This source also shows a Balam and Zachus ESELL who are on page 38 of Williamson County, and a Frederick(?) EZELL on p. 32 of Williamson County). The 1830 Giles County Census shows five EZELLS in Giles County: Abel, p. 137, J.W., p. 138, T., p. 139, W., 142 and Lamock W., p. 154. T. EZELL (the 1820 Timothy of Giles?) is only 50-60 years of age.
