Overview: Benedict Studer
(1820-1913) and wife, Elizabeth (1821-1909), both immigrants from
Switzerland, participated in the Gruetli land lottery on 16 August
1869. Census records indicate that the Studer family immigrated
in about 1868. They brought at least four children from
Switzerland and birthed at least two more while at Gruetli. The
family was not noted in the 1870 TN Census, but they did appear in the
1880 Census.
Benedict Studer remained in Gruitli until at least 1887 (the date of
Confirmation of son, Benedict). Over the next few years, Benedict
and several of his children left Tennessee. Son, Benedict, had
moved to Kansas by 1890. Son, Julius, was found in Hemphill
County, TX by 11890. Another son, Alois, was married in Grundy
Co. in 1896, then moved to Hemphill County, TX by 1900.
Son, Benedict, had moved from Kansas to Oklahoma, and finally to Texas
in the interval 1910-1916 where lived near his brothers until his
death.
Benedict and Elizabeth Studer also moved to Texas by 1890 where they
lived the remainder of their lives with their sons.
Of interest is that son, Benedict Studer, married Barbara Bollinger,
the daughter of another charter member of Gruetli, Jac Bollinger.
Another of Jac Bollinger’s daughters, Katherine, lived with the
Benedict Studer family. She remained single, moving with
Benedict’s family to Texas where she passed away. Son, Alois,
married Margaretha Kissling, the daughter of another Gruetli Charter
Member, Johann Kissling.
