I Will. Mayes of Halifax, very sick and weak of body but perfect sense..To my wife Sarah Mays, my home plantation & my whole estate, during life or widowhood, & at her death or marriage, to be divided as follows: To my son Drury Mays, the son of Sarah-my platation, including 225 acres at the lower end of tract. To son Beverly Mays, the son of Sarah Mays-the remainder of my home tract. I wish my whole Estate to be kept together until my youngest child, Johannah, the daughter of Sarah, arrives at age 21, to have a maintenance out of the whole estate. To my son William Mays-a ewe lamb whith what I (he) has before received from me.

 

I wish that my tract of land called NJyeds be equally divided to make 2 plantations convenient, & that Thomas Lovelace & Alexander Hittson should adjudge the odds in Spicey and give to him that got the meanest part. Thomas was known as "South Fork Thomas". He probably got his nickname from having lived on the second fork of Birch Creek, no doubt to distinguish him from other Thomas Dodson's living in Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia.

Jesse and Ruth were 1st cousins. Jesse was a baptist preacher. Jesse and Ruth went to HAlifax County, Tennessee by 1785. About 1807, they moved to the White/Warren County area of Tennessee. In April 1822, Jesse was called to preach in McMinn County, Tennessee
