The following is a summary of the pension papers of Thomas J. Griswell - they contain quite a few names of Henderson Co. residents for the time period of 1852 - 1879.
I am going to number each of these affidavits with the date they were written and will try to show when they were filed with the Pension Office. It is a given that all of this is quoted or paraphrased from the pension papers and though I may correct some of the spelling, any other notes that I put in will be in.
The first packet was noted as received by the pension office October 4, 1867.
(Thomas J. Griswell, Civil War Pension Application, 1867-1880, 113.465 / 191.595, National Archives, Washington DC.). In 1867 Elizabeth C. Griswell, widow of Thomas J. Griswell - Widow & Minor's pension applications - Henderson Co., TN, (Ibid.).
{Also, there is a William H. Griswell mentioned at several times. We believe that William H. is a cousin to Thomas J. and the son of an Elizabeth Griswell living next door to Joel & Elizabeth Griswell in the 1850 Census. William H. also died in Andersonville and several times in the pension his name crops up as they mix him up with Thomas J.}
1) 23 Sept 1867, Decatur County, James C. Roberts, Clerk of County Court - Elizabeth C. Griswell to me well known who being duly Sworn declares she is a resident of Henderson County and that her age is 40 and she is the widow of Thomas J. Griswell, he volunteered on the 10th day of January 1864 at Union City TN to serve for three years or end of war. He "served faithfully until 24 March 1864 at which time he was surrendered by Colonel Hawkins with the rest of his command into the hands of the Rebels ...... and taken by them to Andersonville prison in the State of Georgia and there kept in prison until the time of his death on /about the 10th day of July ...1867 of Scurry and bad treatment and other diseases contracted in the United State Service and in the Line of Duty. the actual date was 9 August 1864
She further states that Thomas left the following named children - Ann Maranda Griswell, born 8th day of June 1859; William J. H. Griswell, born the 8th day of June 1859; and John C. Griswell, born the 8th day of October 1861. That William and John were still living at home, but that Ann Maranda had been at home until the "month of December 1866 when she married a man by the name of P. B. Gilbert" The affidavit then affirms that Elizabeth was loyal to the United States and had never given aid or comfort to the Rebels in any way. She has remained a widow and that she was married to Thomas J. Griswell on the 18th day of January 1848 by Thomas M. Dodds, an acting Justice of the Peace at that time. Her name before marriage was Elizabeth C. Childers and that public records were burned in a fire during the Rebellion and no private records were kept and that her present address is Lexington, Henderson Co. Elizabeth signed with her name.
Other affidavits taken on the same day included the following:
2) Joseph Kelley and Thomas M. Stanfill who said that they knew Elizabeth C. Griswell before her marriage and ever since, that she remains a widow and that the care and residence of the children are correctly stated. Signed by both of them.
3) 11 November 1867, An affidavit by Thomas M. Dodds - before Samuel McAdams, acting Justice of the Peace, in Henderson County, Tennessee - states that he, Thomas Dodds, was a citizen of the 3rd District of Henderson County, and that he is 56 years old and that during the year of 1848, he was the acting Justice of the Peace and did perform the marriage of Elizabeth C. Childers and Thomas J. Griswell.
4) Same day and same place - Lucy A. R. Morris and Thomas Rhodes, citizens of the 6th and 12th district of Henderson, ages 41 and 49 respectfully in the order above named and that they were present at the wedding of Thomas J. Griswell and Elizabeth C. Childers.
5) Same day and same place - Albert G. Vetetoe and James P. Singleton, ages 23 and 22, citizens of the 11th and 12th District of Henderson County and that they also belonged to Company K in the 7th Regiment of Tennessee Calvary and that they were well acquainted there with Thomas J. Griswell and that he did volunteer on or about the 10th day of January 1864 in Union City, TN and that they saw him dead in the Andersonville prison. It goes on to say that "that the Company in which he belonged was distributed into the other Companies of Said Regiment and the said Thomas was attached to Company C in said Reg't at the time of his death. Albert J. Vetetoe signed his name and James Singelton made his mark.
6) The Adjutant General's Office, Jany 17, 1868 - Pension No. 153.135 - There is no evidence of file in this Office that Thomas Griswell was enrolled and mustered into service in Co. K, 7th Regiment of Tenn Cav. Volunteers. But on the Muster Roll of Co. K of that Regiment for the months of Jany and July 1864, there is the following evidence of service. He is reported Priv. Died August 9, 1864 - Cause and place of death unknown.
7) Surgeon General's Office, Jan. 30, 1868 - "I have the honor to inform you that H.W.H. Griswell, Co. K, 7th Regiment, Tenn. Griswell, "K", 7 Tenn Cav.
8) 11 May 1868 - A form "Claim for Widow's Pension, With Minor Children, War of 1861, Nashville, 113465 - showed that she was issued a certificate for eight (8) dollars commencing Oct. 4 1867 and two dollars per month additional for each of the above-named children commencing 4th day of October 1867.
Notice that payments were to begin only from 4 October 1867, not August of 1864. That seem to cause a new flurry of affidavits
9) 17 April 1868 - Henderson County, Tennessee - D. W. Ross, acting Justice of the Peace took these affidavits from Rebeca L. Rhodes and Nancy E. Whitely - residents of the 5th Civil District. Both signed by mark. They were personally acquainted with Elizabeth and well acquainted with Thomas from the time of their marriage and that she has remained a widow. They also stated that Ann, William & John to be the only legitimate children of the two. They further stated that they were present at the birth of John C. Griswell on the 8th October 1861. She stated she resided in the 5th District of said county and state. Liney signed her name in front of witnesses E. Lee and Cornelius Anglin.
11) Same day - Susannah Thompson, resident of the 6th District, was present at the birth of Ann Maranda 8 September 1850 and know her to be the child of Elizabeth and heir of Thomas. Signed by her mark and witnessed by Bird J. Whitly and Cornelius Anglin.

That they were all heirs of said Thomas. She further states that Ann was with her from the death of her husband until 18 December 1866 when she married P. B. Gilbert and moved to Obion Co., TN. And that William and John were still with her and she was still unmarried
13) 11 November 1868 - Elizabeth files another affidavit saying she was "denied" a pension from the death of her husband to the 4th of October 1867 and she is entitled to the same and makes this declaration in order to secure the arrears accrued thereunder. She is still unmarried and has not moved from her previous residence "except for her convience" and desires her post office changed from Lexington to Scotts Hill, Henderson County, TN.
14) Same day - Decatur County, TN - Ebernzer Lee & G. W. Walters witnessed the above declaration.
15) 5 December 1868 - A new Claim For Widow's Pension, with Minor Children, was issued to Elizabeth showing just the two boys but with Ann Maranda written below b. Sept 8, 1850 and married Dec. 18, 1866. The $8 per month commencing August 10, 1864 and $2 per month additional for each of the above-named children, commencing 25 July 1866, deducting former payments.
16) 6 February 1871 - State of Tennessee, Weakley County, Town of Dresden: County Court, Presiding Bennett Ray, Chairman & W. W. Hornbeck and Gilbert Patterson quarmo Justices.
"This day it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that Elizabeth Griswell, late a citizen of Said county has died leaving no will, ’thurenpon' W. T. Bowden came into our court and asked to be appointed administrator of said Elizabeth C. Grisswell dec'd and the Court being satisfied that the said M. T. Bowden is a suitable person to administer .. Said Estate." Bowden paid bond of eight hundred dollars and J. H. Hall as his Security. Deputy County Clerk was J. B. Finch.
Then in 1876 it all seem to explode and for some reason, there was an inquiry into the service of Thomas J. Griswell.
17) 4 November 1876, George W. Moore, a resident of Hardin County, appeared in Henderson Co. to give an affidavit. Mr. Moore served as a "Late Capt. of Company A, 7th Tenn Cav. and was well acquainted with Thomas J. Griswell, having lived within 4 miles of him at the time of the breaking out of the Rebellion and that he never was looked upon by his neibors as being Loyal to the Government to the United States and that he comitted maney Disloyal acts during the War. Such as joining a Rebel company organized in the town of Mifflin .. Rebel Capt. Hutson and hiring his brother David C. Griswell as a Substitute to take his place, he then acted as a detailing master or conscription officer for the Rebel army in Tennessee, his Residence was in the county of Henderson and state of Tennessee at the breaking out of the Rebellion and exercised his detailing office in the 6th Civil District in said county and state". Griswell went from Henderson County, Tenn in Said Company of Capt Curtis Hutson and in the 13th Regiment com by Col Wiliams and at the Battle of Pittsburge Landing, the Regiment being demolished ... reorganised to the 51 Tenn and that the Said David C. Griswell continued in Said Regiment or in the Rebel army untill the close of the war they further stat that the Said Thomas H. Griswell did act as conscription officer for the Rebel army in Henderson County, Tennessee and never was recognised as a union or Loyal by any of naibors" ............... both James P. Odell and W. N. Arnold signed their names.
19) 7th February 1877 - Exhibit, by W N Arnold to G. H. Ragsdale - near Lexington, Henderson Co., TN - Arnold was age 55 and resided near Lexington and was well acquainted with Thos Griswell, the husband of the pensioner in this case during the war and know that he was noterously a disloyal man early in the war. That he was the Capt. of a Militia Co. in Henderson Co and acted under the rebel authority in gathering up men for the rebel army. **** (basically what Ragsdale said in his letter) *** It also states that Griswell "tried to enlist the "affiant in the rebel army and would have succeeded but for the fact that affiant got out of his reach. That he was also a member of a Guerilla Co. which plundered the unprotected people & finally went to the union army to escape a trial for offences committed "..
20) Also on same day and place a Mr. Robert Matthews appeared and gave much the same testimony expect he said "he was a disloyal man and one of the worst characters in this county. That he acted and voted with the secession party and was considered by all union men as their enemy and the scurvey of the Government". "That at one time he was a member of a thieving gang who engaged in plundering unprotected citizens." (** the rest is almost word for word of Arnold's except) "That Griswell did not go off with this Co and affiant does not know how he got out of the Company.
21) Exhibit - same day, same place, by Ragsdale - Erwin McAdams appeared, being aged 59, residing near Lexington, Henderson Co., TN - and stated that "he was well acquainted with Thos. J. Griswell who was the husband of the pensioner in this case. That when the question of secession came up, he took sides against the Government and with the enemies of the same. That he talked in favor of secession and use his influence in that way. That affiant did not see him vote of the ordinance of secession but he is just as satisfied that he voted with the southern party as if he has seen him vote. That he lived near to affiant and affiant can not be mistaken as to his (Griwells) position. That some time after the war commenced, he joined with some other thieves and they commenced to plunder all unprotected citizens. That while engaged in this plundering he was captured by the Federals and taken to Court where he was released on parole. That affiant understood that he afterward joined the Federal Army at Union City Tenn, was captured by the rebels and died in a southern prison. Erwin McAdams signed his name.
22) 7 February 1877, near Lexington, Henderson Co., TN - Samuel McAdams, age 47 and residing near Lexington, gave the following affidavit: (basically same wording as the two above) that Griswell was a disloyal man, that Griswell acted with the secession party and used his influence to gather up men and was engaged in plundering unprotected citizens. "That affiant does not know of his rendering aid or sympathy to any other cause than that of the rebels / nor this enlistment in the Federal Army. Signed by Samuel McAdams in front of G. H. Ragsdale, special agent.
23) 8 February 1877, Jack's Creek, Henderson Co., TN - Affidavit by B. J. Wheatley, age 40, resides near Lexington, Henderson Co., TN - that Elizabeth died about three years ago and the two children are still living and in Hickman Co., that he lived near the Thos. J. Griswells during the war. That " he does not think that said Griswell voted atol at the secession election". "That he has no recollection of Griswell joining Capt. Hutsons Co or of his hiring his brother, David, to go as a substitute. That David enlisted in Col Williams Regt which was the 51st or 52nd Tenn and served one year when he was disabled. In the beginning of the war, Militia Co. was organized in the 5th Dist. of Henderson Co. and Griswell was elected Capt. of said Co. What details were made from this Co for the regular army whenever the authorities made a demand. That sometime afterwards Griswell was pressed into a Calvary organized by one Franklin but deserted it and went with the Union Army. That his brother, John, went in the 13th Tenn, Capt. Ross
24) 14 February 1877, Memphis, TN - In a letter from G. H. Ragsdale, Special Agent for the Pension Office, he reported his investigation made in case No. 113465 of Eliz C. Griswell, widow of Thos J. Griswell, priv. Co. K 7th Tenn Cavalry. "This investigation was ordered on information that the soldier was disloyal and served in the rebel Army." "I find that he acted with the secession party in 1861 and was ready on every occasion to use his influence in favor of rebellion. He was elected Captain of a Militia Company in the 5th District of Henderson Co Tenn and acted under orders from the Confederates in detailing and gathering up men for the rebel army. He was active in the performance of this duty and was a terror to union men. He afterwards ran for Lieut. in a Confedracy organized at Mifflin Town but was defeated by a preacher called Parson Haw. It is generally understood that he hired his brother, David, to go as a substitute for him in this Co. - I could not find out what Regt this Co. went into. After this he provied a gang of men who joined together for the purpose of plundering. He followed stealing until captured by the Federals and afterward he joined the union army. If he ever drew a loyal breath previous to his enlistment in the union army, no one of his acquaintances are aware of the fact. All his brothers went in the Rebel Army and his brother David was also in the service and was no doubt a substitute for his brother as alledged.
The pensioner (Eliz. C.) has been dead about three years. The two children live in Hickman Co. KY. No claim has been filed for them yet. signed by G.H. Ragsday, Special Agt, Sent to Hon. J. A. Bentley, Commissioner, Washington DC.
