Humphreys County, Tennessee

1850 Census

Notes from David Hooper

The 1850 census was begun on August 21, 1850 and completed on November 11, 1850 by A. J. Saunders, Asst. Marshall for the County of Humphreys, Tennessee. It was done in two parts - the County, and the town of Waverly. The County had 887 Dwellings and Families listed. This was incorrect for there were several places where he listed the same numbers twice. As I transcribed these, I marked the 2nd listing with a small (a). The town of Waverly had 32 Dwellings and Families listed.

The census gave the following information. The name of every Person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1850 was with the family and a description; age, sex, color (White, Black, Mulatto), Profession or Occupation, Value of Real Estate Owned, Place of Birth (State, Territory, or Country), Married within year, Attended school within year, Person over 20 years who could not read nor write, and Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper, or convict.

All males 15 and over were shown to have a profession/occupation. None of the females were shown to have professions/occupation. Some males may not have one listed. It is because they may have been listed as being blind, idiotic, or some other reason such as that. If there is no place of birth listed beside the name, it will be the same as the last state listed. A blank space in the place of birth column equals ditto marks. For size limitations I am listing the professions or occupations of each individual as numbers. I am also leaving out value of real estate, education, etc. Below is a table showing the corresponding profession/occupation and numbers:

Farmer   1   Ditcher   15 Student   29
