There are 3 tombstones near the east fence. Starting with the one on the south
side, they read: |
||
J. H. Bates Born Mar 28, 1842 Died April 22, 1913 |
Bates, William April 16, 1850 Dec 28, 1930 Erected by Grandchildren |
Bates, Fannie A. Wife of W. M. Bates Born Feb 1, 1860 Died June 13, 1896 Gone but not forgotten |
There is a tombstone on the west side of the cemetery but we could not get to it (so much poison oak) when we visited August 2002. From previous visits, I do not remember writing or it was legible. William Bates was my great grandfather (father of my grandmother Jennye Celestia Bates Sullivan). I strongly suspect his parents are buried in the plot but do not have markers. They were James Hicks Bates and Mary Jane Marshall Bates who came to Lauderdale County sometime between 1840 and 1850. They died sometime around 1871. J. H. Bates was a bachelor uncle who lived with William Bates and his family. He was a civil war veteran, having seen action at Vicksburg. |
