Cemetery Upkeep

During the April 5th, 2004 meeting of the Macon County Tennessee Commissioners, Teresa Whittemore, representing the Macon County Historical Society and supported by Tina Goad Short, Jayne McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Chamberlain and Jan Chamberlain Davis, all members of the Historical Society, asked for county and community support in cleaning and maintaining area cemeteries.  She presented to them a list of cemeteries that they are aware of the need to clean and asked that the list be kept open for future additions. The commissioners voted and unanimously decided that the county could and should help in this project by providing man-power and equipment to beautify and make these cemeteries more accessible..  In addition to the favorable response to this request Teresa and her gang were also pleased to gain the support of the West-End Fire & Rescue, who are willing to help clean cemeteries on the western end of the county,  as well as individuals from the East End of the county who are willing to lend their time, labor and equipment to aid in this effort.

In order to a cemetery to qualify to be cleaned by the county they have to be added to the list and declared abandoned or dilapidated.  The list declares them to be qualified for these efforts.  Cemeteries such as Memorial Gardens1, Phillip Anderson & Son1, Cold Springs2 and Green Grove3 have established trusts to provide for their care.

Cemeteries currently on the list include, but are not limited to:
