James Edward Bradley
And Family
Contributed by Bob Chaney

James Edward Bradley, George Washington Bradley's big brother, was born on 21 Jun 1849 in Tennessee, the first of three sons born to Terry and Harriett CAGE Bradley. He is shown in the 1850 census living with his parents (His age was 1 or 2, but was mistakenly recorded or transcribed as 11 or 12). His father died when he was 7 yr. old, and when his mother subsequently remarried, he and his brothers were shown living in 1860 with their mother and stepfather Pleasant Butram. At some point James decided he didn't like his situation and moved in with and was subsequently raised by his Aunt Jane and Uncle Pierce Tuck.

Chloe Amanda Jenkins Bradley

By 1869, James was farming and carrying the mail. Chloe Amanda JENKINS during this period had been proposed to by an (unidentified) lawyer who had promised to put her through school. She instead, went to stay the night with her married sister Sarah Camilla JENKINS Sullivan, eloped with James that night, and was married "in a calico dress" on 24 Nov 1869. The first of their three daughters, Edna Earl Bradley was born in a log cabin approximately a mile west of Lafayette on 8 Oct 1870. Eva Mae and Alma Lera were born respectively on 1 May 1872 and 18 June 1874.

James left Tennessee in 1878 and with J. K. Carr and Willie Norris drove through in a covered wagon to Kansas, settling in what according to N. P. Reid (Macon Co Historical Society Newsletters, 1985) became known as Tennessee Bend, lying approximately 7 Miles Southwest of Augusta Kansas. Chloe Amanda, the three girls and Chloe's sisters Mariah Angeline Carr and Louisa Frances Morris and families left Tennessee the 6th of Nov 1978 and came through to Wichita, Kansas (about 20 Miles West of Augusta) by train, where the husbands picked them up in a wagon. According to N. P. Reid's narrative, there were two other of Chloe (Puss) Bradley's siblings living in the Tennessee Bend Settlement: namely Noah Jenkins and Rebecca Susan Adams. He also stated "James Bradley and Puss Bradley lived nearer the center of the settlement.  They were the parents of three fine girls, Edna, Alma, and Birdie."

Chloe Amanda JENKINS Bradley died on 5 Jan 1927, and James died on 6 Mar 1932. They are both buried in Highland Cemetery in Wichita Kansas, as is Edna who died on 1 Oct 1963.
