Campbell question. I am trying to identify the parents of James Knox Polk Campbell, born in "Nashville" in 1827. He shows up in the Maury County US Census of 1850 as a "businessman". He moved to Washington DC during the James Knox Polk administration, working in the Post Office as a junior clerk. He claimed to be a nephew of President Polk, but since Polk has no sisters who married a Campbell, I syspect he stretched the claim a bit. Pres. Polk did have a cousin who married a Campbell, one Elizabeth (Eliza) Polk. Her husband was Robert Campbell (Jr.). They lived in Maury County, and I have traced their family through the US census records to show the possibility of a son of JKP Campbell age. I desire to obtain solid evidence of Robert and Eliza Campbell as parents of JKP Campbell. (Or if that is not the case, just who his parents were.) By the way, after Washington DC, JKP Campbell moved to Paris, Texas, where he settled. I have info on him after that, if anyone wants to have it. Thanks in advance for help with my search. Did this minister marry your ancestors?? Benjamin Winchester LAUDERDALE, Church of Christ minister, traveled in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, 1868-1892, establishing new churches and nursing weak churches. I would like to chronicle his travels by following the baptism, marriages he performed or pulpits he preached from. I would like to receive information on dates, places and people involved. (He is my gg grandfather) Obituary: Dr. B. W. Lauderdale was born in Sumner County, Tenn., June 30, 1831 and died in Shelby County, October 15, 1895. being reared by a noble Christian mother, he united with the Church of Christ at age sixteen. he graduated from the Louisville Medical College in 1853 and practiced medicine until after the war. He was married in 1860 to Miss Mary C. Taylor, of Tennessee, with whom he lived happily for more than thirty-five years, and who still lives to mourn his loss. He entered the Confederate service as a surgeon in 1862 and served till the close of the war without losing a day for sickness or leave of absence, surrendering under General Forrest, May 28, 1865. He began preaching in 1868, and remained actively in the ministry until death, allowing nothing to keep him from his master's work. he lived to bless humanity. he was always charitable and generous even to a fault. His skill and experience as a physician made his life, as a minister a double blessing for the sick. Though he gave up the practice of medicine on entering the ministry, his life continued to be largely given to the ministrations on the sick. During the awful yellow fever scourge of 1878, he gave himself for weeks and months wholly to nursing the sick and dying, regardless of personal safety and without hope of earthly compensation. For more than twenty-seven years he preached the gospel incessantly over a large area of six or seven states. he founded many churches, and is estimated to have brought into the master's fold no less than two thousand souls. He delighted to nurse weak churches into self-sustaining strength. His character was without spot or blemish in as high a degree as it seems possible for mortals to attain. His life, after his entrance into the ministry, was devoted and consecrated to the one great purpose of preaching the "unsearchable riches of Christ." His oft-expressed desire was to spend and to be spent for the Master. His faith in the promises of God was boundless. He said he had long since settled his eternal interests on an eternal basis. his life is now a ...........(remaining text lost)

We are decendants of John Mack, Rev.War Soldier, buried near McCains. Your list of cemeteries in Maury County tells the location and I know it to be correct, however, I have a problem; I visited the site in the summer. Unfortunately, weeds were about three feet high and as I had three small children with me I was forced to abandon my search after a couple hours. Mrs Jill Garrett was to go with me on my next visit. I see in your homepage that she has passed away. That is indeed a loss for this lady was a genealogist of the first order and a major contributor to Maury County projects. I now need to talk to someone who has tips on how I may locate the grave of John Mack the next time I visit. I suppose it will be easier if I search in the winter when weeds are not a problem. Also, is there an effort underway to have the historical marker put back? If not, does anyone know who to contact to start one.

Seeking information on the forbearers and descendents of Peterson McGill. McGill was born in Tennessee circa 1816. He first appears in census records for Giles County in 1840 as Peter Magill. McGill apparently lived near the Alabama state line (vicinity of Limestone Co., Alabama), as he was enumerated in the latter county in 1850 and 1860. In 1870 he was counted once again in Giles Co., while in 1880 he was in Lauderdale Co., AL. Peterson served in the 26th/50th Alabama Infantry, CSA, from 1861-1865, and was wounded either at Shiloh or Atlanta. He was married four times: Mahala Long, Eodus (Oda) Marbut, Sarah Shelton or Sherwood, and Catherine Daly. He had 17 known children by these spouses, most of whom lived in Giles Co., TN or Limestone Co., AL. I have found records in Giles Co. Court Minutes during the 1840's documenting land transactions with other McGills including Eli T. McGill, Joel McGill and Isaac McGill. The latter individuals may have been brothers or cousins. Eli T. McGill lived in Davidson Co. circa the Civil War, and filed a claim (Which was denied) with the Southern Claims Commission in the 1870's. I would appreciate any information that anyone might have to share with me regarding Peterson and his family.

MORRIS< Have been researching for many years, trying to locate my Morris ancestors. I believe, from what I have found they were in Maury County, Tennessee in 1850-60. My gg grandfather was a Polk Morris, (might have been Jefferson Polk), he had one brother that I am sure of Joseph Morris. Joseph's family and Polks came to Western Tennessee later on. Polk had a son Willam J. Morris who was my great grandfather. If any of these names sound familiar to anyone out there I would love to hear from you. This line has been a problem for a very long time, and I would love to have a break-through on it soon. Thanks to anyone who might be able to shed some light on this research, or help in any way. Frank Saffarrans Wed Oct 16 14:41:12 1996
I am writing a Saffarrans family history that has ties to Columbia, Tennessee in 1880. The 1880 census shows a record for for my g grandfather Jno Saffarrans W, M, 73, Retired Merchant; living at dwelling 571, family 697. In the margin, near his entry is a notation "High St" In the family above (570-696) is an extra notation "98" next to dwelling/family number. I now am wondering if the "98" is the High Street address of family 696. Questions: 1) What are the addresses of homes on High Street near the Polk home? 2) Are there records that would show what street address John Saffarrans was living in 1880 and is the house still standing?
