1870 Census
Transcribed, Typed and Formatted By:
Don Cook and edited by Joy Locke

If you have any corrections to the 1870 census please e-mail Don Cook & Joy Locke . Be sure to give Don and Joy the District # and HH#.  We are aware of the many misspellings of the names.  Unless the name is off in such a way a person can't figure it out, we won't change the spelling, however I can put after the actual spelling the way it was supposed to be.    This will allow people a fighting change of finding the names on the actual census microfilm.  The census takers abbreviated names in strange ways and they weren't consistent.  Names with a "th" looked like "sh" so that Martha looked like Marsha or Catherine like Casherine.  Many of the first names were abbreviated, so that Marion was spelled Mar, Meredith was Mer, Absolum was Abso. so you get the idea.  They left off vowels on the ends of names.  We have the actual stamped page number at the end of each entry.  If you have ancestry.com, you can try looking for a neighbor if you can't find your person that way.  Ancestry.com misread many names in this census.

This was just after the Civil War ended, the first time the freed slaves were listed and there were many families who appear and leave by 1880.  There are many missing families, I'm sure they missed many or maybe they were elsewhere and returned.

CENSUS INDEX

This  is an ALL NAME index.  I've divided it into 7 parts.   You'll find the surname, the given name, Age, District # and  the HH#.  When you find the name you want to view, write down the "district" and "HH #" of that person.   Use your back arrow to get back here, then click on the link to that family on the index beneath this one.  DO NOT CLICK on the names and expect to find the entry, these are just text files, not direct links.  Just follow the directions above to find your ancestor.
