5'TH TENN. INFANTRY One of the main families was John Butler Tipton, 1st Monroe Co.Court Clerk. There is extensive information about his war experiences and those of his 3 sons. He and his son Caswell are pictured in the book. There were approximately 3 companies of soldiers from Monroe County. Blackmore Mayo, one-time postmaster of Eve's Mill is also in the book. The book also tells about Sherman's army on his march through Monroe Co. staying on the Tipton farm on his way to Knoxville after the Battle of Missionary Ridge. There were approximately 250 soldiers from Monroe Co. in the 5th.
