Carbon, Burrell Joseph (1853 – 1920)*
MONTGOMERY COUNTY BIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY
HOUSE, 45th and 46th General Assemblies; 1887-91; representing Montgomery
County; Democrat. Born at Palmyra, Montgomery County, Apr. 6, 1853; son
of Burrell and Sarah A. (Andrews) Carbon. Attended "common schools"; described
as "self-educated". Married in 1874 to Maria C. Batson, daughter of Stephen
C. and Maria A. Batson; children
-- six sons and four daughters; those surviving him were: Burrell B.,
Repps L., Esken, Sidney W., Joanna M., Betty, and Sarah; names of other
three not determined. Settled with parents at Carbondale [sic], near Clarksville,
Montgomery County, 1858; telegraph operator in early years; began merchandising
at Carbondale, 1876. One of incorporators and member board of trustees
of Cumberland Institute. Elected justice of the peace and member of county
court, 1882; postmaster at Carbondale, 1883-86, 1893-1915. Member Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. Died at Carbondale June 1, 1920; buried in family
graveyard near home.
