JOSEPH PHILLIPS DUNLOP

1. Joseph Phillips Dunlop, son of Hugh Dunlop, tobacconist, est. with his brother, Matt, Dunlop Milling, the first of such in the city limits of C’ville where corn was ground into meal and wheat into flour.

2. Joseph P. Dunlop built the stately home on Madison (now housing the Red Cross) and called it Ayrshire, for his father, Hugh Dunlop's home county in Scotland.

3. Dunlop’s home became the seed for Robert Penn Warren’s novel, AT HEAVEN’S GATE, relating and embellishing the story of Luke Lea’s sequester there.
