JOHN WILLIAM WELKER

Section 10

1. APSU French professor Emeritus John Wm. Welker died of pulmonary fibrosis in 1998.

2. A decade before in ‘88 he was awarded CHEVALIER in the ORDER OF ARTS & LETTERS, which is equivalent to knighthood in England.

3. Mr. Welker founded the local chapter of ALLIANCE FRANCAIS and the local Community Ambassador Program, which enabled local students to spend summers abroad for both cultural and language experiences.

4. Upon graduation from Middlebury College, Vermont (foremost language school in America), Billy was awarded a Ford Foundation grant which enabled him with his family to live and study in France for a year.
