*Snow Blossoms: The Ladies of Petros United Methodist Church
book contains stories from the lives of four women who live in Petros who are now in their 80s and 90s and who are dedicated to their church, their town and each other. The ladies are Alice Lucille Bullock Whitus, Lucy Alice Duncan Patrick, Polly Rogers Whaley Woodward and Imogene Nelle Whitus Evans.
The book also contains a history of Petros, the Petros United Methodist Church and Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex (formerly called "Brushy Mountain Penitentiary").
The front of the book is a photo of Petros, ca. 1908, from the T.C. Farnham Collection at Roane County Heritage Commission. The book also includes a photo gallery of past and current pictures of these four ladies, the town of Petros, the United Methodist Church and the prison.

"The book is based on research done by past and present students of Coalfield School. The book includes Coalfield, Petros, and Joyner. These are the areas our students come from. They interviewed parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends about the past. Some of these interviews actually began when I taught junior high back in the 1970's and early 1980's. A few of them were done by my advanced English class in 1990. However, most of them were done by my students from 1998 until it was published. The students transcribed their tapes and typed the interviews. I asked for some historical information from known historians in our community-James Bunch, Bill Jackson, Reece Jones, Armethia Lively, Bill Lyles, Georgia Melhorn, and Florence Worthington (I used her book). The pictures came from many different people and sources. It was a monumental task and has mistakes."

Information was copied 'AS IS'
to preserve the language and wording of the time. There are lots
of misspelled words and lots of missing punctuation. Some of these 'death
notices' were only a line in the community news sections and others are
very long and very 'wordy' in an attempt to honor the deceased. Every
effort was made to include the entire obituary.
