HAMBY, ROSSIE:
DELLEFIELD RD MAN DIES AFTER AS CAR HITS BRIDGE
A 40-year-old Dellefield Rd. resident was killed last night when his car smashed into the center pier of the Ohio Turnpike overpass on Rt. 57 last night about 9:07. Rossie Hamby, 513 Dellefield Rd., was pronounced dead at Elyria Memorial hospital when he arrived at the emergency room. The accident occurred while a State Highway patrolman was on his way to stop the car after another motorist had reported seeing it being driven in an erratic manner and with no headlights. Lorain County coroner Dr. Paul J. Kopsch ruled the death the county's 35th traffic fatality. It was the fifth traffic fatality in Elyria this year. The other four city deaths all involved pedestrians. Went through light Russell S. Haslage, 2809 Riverview Lane, Lorain, told police he followed Hamby's car west on Rt 57 Bypass, and noticed the car weaving. At one intersection, Haslage said, Hamby almost went through a red light. Haslage said he feared for the other driver's safety, and stopped to report the car at the Elyria post of the State Highway Patrol after getting ahead of Hamby where Rt 57 turns north on Lorain Blvd. Haslage said a patrolman left to stop the car, but radioed back he found it against an abutment of the turnpike bridge. Another witness, who was following Hamby when the accident occurred, said Hamby was driving in the right - hand lane until he reached a point about 500 feet south of Warden Ave. Then he speeded up to approximately 55 miles per hour and moved into the center lane, then into the center divider strip. The car did not slow down before hitting the concrete bridge abutment Investigating Elyria police said there were no skid marks from the car. Hamby was found  lying on the ground next to the car on the driver's side. Police said a relative described Hamby as only a 'light drinker."' He was reported- to have been under a physician'scare for ulcers and low blood pressure. Police estimated damage to the Hamby car at $1,800. There was no damage to the bridge, they said. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Della, and two sons, Daniel, 10, and Dennis, 7. Mr. Hamby was born in Lancing, Tenn., July 24, 1923, and had lived in Elyria 17 years.
