SAMPSEL, ROY LEE, 76, of Coalfield, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Sampsel retired in 1983 after working for 34 years as an electrician with Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He was born in Harlan County, Ky., on Sept. 25, 1921, the son of Charles Arthur and Mary Lou Jackson Sampsell, both now deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served as a chief torpedo officer in the submarine service division during World War II. Mr. Sampsel had been a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Coalfield for more than 50 years and was ordained a deacon at the church in 1954. He is survived by his wife, Eva Dean Sampsel; three sons, R.L. "Sam" Sampsel and Dick Sampsel and his wife, Dottie, all of Knoxville, and Rodney Sampsel and his wife, Diane, of Humble, Texas; a sister, Lahoma Ray of Harriman; a brother, Elbert Sampsell and his wife, Betty, of Hopewell, Va.; and by six grandchildren, four great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.A brother, Charles Sampsell, died earlier. SAMPSEL, ROY LEE, JR. "SAM" - age 57, a resident of Coalfield, passed away Friday, May 3, 2002 at Vanderbilt Medical Center of Nashville. Mr. Sampsel was preceded in death by his father, Roy Lee Sampsel, Sr. Survivors: mother, Eva Dean Adcock Sampsel of Coalfield; sons, George Evan Sampsel and wife, Carla, of Knoxville and Joel Lee Sampsel and wife, Scarlett, of Wartburg; grandchildren, Evan, Skylar and Zack; brothers, Rodney Lynn Sampsel and wife, Diane, of Texas and Richard Sampsel and wife, Dottie, of Knoxville; special friends, Joyce Petrowski of Powell. Mr. Sampsel was born July 6, 1944 in Coalfield. He was a retired Contractor. He retired in 1992. He was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church of Knoxville, however he was very active in both Cumberland Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Coalfield. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Mack Smith and Rev. Hershel Chevallier officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, May 6, 2002 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. SANDERS, ISABELLE, 87, Deer Lodge, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 in the Life Care Center of Morgan County. She was a member of West Side Hungarian Reformed Church of Christ of Cleveland, OH. Her father was a founding member. She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Esther Varga; brothers Elmer and Joe Varga; and sister Helen Fodor. She is survived by her daughters Sherry and her husband Frank Waschevski of Deer Lodge and Pat Bowen of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren Justin and Cody Waschevski; brother Alex Varga of Sunbright; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends and neighbors. She was the daughter of the late Hiram and Elizabeth Patterson Armes and was owner and operator of a general store in Petros. Preceded by husband Luther Sands who died in 1962 and a son Mozelle Sexton who died in 1945. SARGENT, ZACKERY W. 'ZACK', 21, Harriman, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2005 in Roane Medical Center. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs and a member of the Laborers Union, Local 818 in Knoxville. Zack enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ira and Pernia Sargent and Wayne and Marie Farr. She was a member of Petros Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Scarbro; parents, John Edward and Frances Williams Jones; brother, Roger; sisters, Mamie, Mary and Nell. SCARBROUGH, DELTA AGNES MAYTON - of the Piney Community in Oakdale, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Royal Care in Harriman, where she had been a resident for the past three years. She was born in Harriman, Tennessee, to Ida Phillips Burns and Charlie Mayton. She was the faithful and loving wife of Reverend Mark Scarbrough, who preceded her in death in 1995, after 68 years of marriage. Besides being a pastor's wife and a care giver to all those whom she knew, Delta worked 50 years in Harriman Hosiery, beginning her work there at the age of fifteen. Even after her retirement she and her beloved husband kept busy raising strawberries keeping bee hives and cultivating one of the most beautiful vegetable gardens around. Before her illness, she was very active in her church, the most recent time spent at Deer Lodge First Baptist, and then coming back home to Piney Church, where, a long ago she helped organize the first WMU (Women's Missionary Union). She directed the first Bible School at the old AME Zion Church in Oakdale during the 40's. She also assisted her husband by serving in several community activities, one being the Lion's club, where they both worked to keep the club going in Oakdale for a good number of years. She supported Oakdale School, where her homemade fried apple pies, funnel cakes and fudge candy helped granddaughters, nieces and neighbors win queen races and raise money for the school. She was an avid quilter and also crocheted beautifully. When a grave had to be dug at Piney, she always provided the grave diggers with food and drink. She and her husband often took into their home young girls or boys who didn't have a place to stay. She truly cared for the sick and elderly and was a friend to all, young and old alike. Besides her parents and husband; daughter, Peggy Johnson; sister, Ollie Lozano; brothers, Sidney, George and Gillis Burns; sons-in-law, Clarence Langley and Millard Johnson; daughter-in-law, Peggy Jean Scarbrough and granddaughters, Theresa Gail and Debbie Scarbrough, all preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Jacqueline) Langley of Oakdale; sons and wives C. E. (Gene) and Christine Scarbrough of Chattanooga, William F. (Bill) and Joy Scarbrough of Harriman, and Paul and Vera Scarbrough of Oakdale. Also surviving are sister and brother-in-law, Bunche and Glen Davis of Monsanto, Wash., and brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Teresa Burns of Monroe, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; beloved brothers and sisters-in-law, J. SCHUBERT, ANDERSON "BUTCH" - age 84 of Clinton, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2000, at his residence. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Morgan County. He was a United States Navy veteran who served in WWII. He was a retired building contractor and owned and operated Schubert Building Supply. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking & making crafts. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He loved feeding the many types of birds that came by his place. Butch was born November 22, 1915 in Morgan County. SCHUBERT, MRS. ETHEL RUSSELL: Mrs. Bruno Schubert Dies in Knoxville; Relatives in Statesville have been advised of the death of Mrs. Bruno Schubert which occured Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. Mrs. Schubert had been seriously ill for the past two months and her death was not unexpected. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Schubert was Miss Ethel Russell, a daughter of the late J.L. Russell and Mrs. Russell. She was a granddaughter of Dr. W.M. Nicholson and a niece of Mrs. B. L. Dellinger and Miss Frances Nicholson, of Statesville. She would have been 29 years old in May. Mrs. Schubert made her home in Statesville for a number of years, but since her marriage about five years ago, she had lived in Wartburg, Tenn. She is survived by her husband, a young son, and her brother - Mr. Liles Russell of Dover. No notice of funeral arrangements have been received however it is presumed interment will be in Wartburg. SCHUBERT, EVA SMITH, Oak Ridge, passed away Dec. 18, 2001. She was the widow of the late John H. Schubert, a former merchant who died in 1967. The couple owned and operated Schubert's Store in Petros for many years. Mrs. Schubert later worked at Emory Valley Center in Oak Ridge for 16 years. Mrs. Schubert was a member of the Church of God faith and a member of Eastmore Church of God in Knoxville. She enjoyed going to church very much. Her grandchildren were very dear to her. Mrs. Schubert was especially close to her mother-in-law, Emma Trail Schubert of Petros, who died in 1980. She was a native of Asheville, N.C. She is survived by her four children John Wayne Schubert and wife Vivian of Oliver Springs, Marty West, Debra Nation, and husband David and Missy Durbin and husband Mike, all of Oak Ridge; her beloved grandchildren John Wiggins, Paul and Josh Hall, Emily Nation and Emma Phillips of Oak Ridge and Monica Lee Carlisle and husband James of Oliver Springs; six great-grandchildren Cory Carlisle, Megan, Kaylee and Brandon Morgan and Jessica and Ashlyn Duncan, all of Oliver Springs; many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and relatives still living in Asheville, N.C. and in Waynesville; special sister-in-law Georgia Schubert Snyder of Knoxville; special friend and nursing attendent Donnie Killion. SCHUBERT, ROY E.- Former Morgan County Commissioner Roy E. Schubert died Friday evening at Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. Schubert, 89, was a former member of the Morgan County school board and a past president of Citizens Bank and Trust in Wartburg. The Wartburg resident was a retired auto dealer and oil distributor. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be at 8 p.m. today at Schubert Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert Pfaff officiating. SCOTT, L. H., Circuit Court Clerk of Morgan County committed suicide last Saturday morning at about five o'clock by shooting himself through the head with a rifle. SCOTT, MARGARET GREY PATCHING - age 76 of Oakdale, died Saturday morning, March 4, 2000 in the Morgan Co. Life Care Center, Wartburg. She was born April 29, 1923 in Oakdale, Tenn. She wasthe daughter of the late Walter and Stella Patching, of Oakdale. Mrs. Scott was a former resident of Chattanooga for many years, where she was a member of and active in the children's ministries and women's organization at the Brainerd United Methodist Church, Chattanooga. In recent years she was a member of the Kinston UnitedMethodist Church and she was active in the Morgan County Genealogical and Historical Society, she was especially devoted to researching family history and organizing the annual reunion of the Scott and Clark families and helped organize the Patching reunions. Surviving: husband, Russell J. Scott, of Oakdale; daughter, Nancy S. Seay, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; son, Gary Scott of Lebanon, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Paul; and Ryan Seay, and Arthur and Abigail Scott. Burial in Morgan Memorial Gardens, Wartburg. She leaves to celebrate her life, two sons, Mr. John Franklin Morgan and wife, Mary Ellen of Madison Hgts, Michigan, and Mr. Ricky Lynn Morgan and wife, Trease of Wartburg; one daughter, Mrs. Eva Mae Hines and husband, Lawrence of Wartburg, also six grandchildren, whom she loved dearly are Mrs. Cheryl Breannan, Mrs. Debbie Teucher, and Mrs. Donna Smith, all of Michigan, Mr. Scott Hines of Wartburg, and Joshua Lee and Talia Rachelle Morgan of Knoxville; five great-grandchildren, Savannah and Shianne Hines, Connor Brennan, and Kyle and Lucas Teucher, also numerous nieces and nephews, with special thanks to Charles (Jake) Gregg and Alvin Carmack, her nephews who were there for her almost everyday during her illness, and Trease Morgan for her special care. Wartburg, Tenn., February 16. - (Special) William J. Scott, one of the most promiment men of this section, is dead. He served with distinction on the staff of General Spears, in the civil war, and was elected attorney general, administering to Congressman Henry R. Gibson his only defeat. He was the son of the noted Julian F. Scott, who was the original of Mark Twain's "Colonel Mulberry Sellers".

She taught for several years in the Harlan Independent School System and was the former director of the Harlan Workshop, she had resided in Knoxville for almost 25 years. SEIBER, EDWARD - 76, of Coalfield, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Seiber was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Hazard, Ky., the son of Sabe Seiber and Goldie Hoskins Seiber, who are deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received three Bronze Stars. He had reached the rank of staff sergeant before being discharged. Mr. Seiber lived for many years in Ypsilanti, Mich., before moving to Tennessee. Before retirement, he owned and operated Seiber Brothers Construction Co., in Ypsilanti, which he founded in 1948. He had lived in this area for 20 years. He was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Coalfield. Mr. Seiber is survived by his sons, Jerry Seiber and his wife, Amy, of Oak Ridge, Tony Seiber and his wife, Wanda, of Caryville and Gary Seiber and his wife, Fontainne, of Oliver Springs; his daughter, Elaine Cloud and her husband, Tim, of Ypsilanti; and by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. SEXTON, MR. BART JR., age 100 of Wartburg, passed away on Saturday, March 13th, 2004.
He was a life long resident of Morgan County and owner of Bart's Trading Post in Lancing, TN for more than thirty years. On August 4, 2003, his 100th birthday celebration was held at the Life Care Center of Morgan County. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bart and Mary Sexton; son, J.B. Sexton; and infant daughter, Debra Kay Sexton. Two brothers and three sisters: Sam and Louis Sexton, Josephine Love, Ida Byrd, and Lenora Armstrong. SEXTON, REV. FRANK D., 70, of Coalfield, died Friday, July 21, 2006, in Baptist West Hospital, Knoxville. He accepted the Lord as his savior in 1978 and began his service preaching the gospel. He pastored numerous churches in his home area, and his passion was for the Lord and his grandkids. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served for 10 years. He was preceded in death by parents, the Rev. Jim and Essie Lord Sexton; grandson, J.C. SEXTON, REV. IRA DEAN - age 80, of Sunbright, Tenn., departed this life on Sunday, July 7, 2002. He was born August 20, 1921, in the Macedonia Community on Emory River in Morgan County. He was an active member of Pilot Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, and an ordained Missionary Baptist Minister for 54 years. He pastored many churches throughout Morgan and Roane Counties and Northside Baptist and Sardis Baptist in Hammond, Indiana, as well as Meadow Grove Baptist in Pine Knot, Kentucky, for 17 years. He also held many revivals throughout East Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana, and was a 55 year member of Emerald Lodge #377 of Wartburg. Ira was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Freeman Sexton and Sally Griffith Sexton; brothers, Leamon, Kermit, and Kelly Sexton and sisters, Della Phillips and Zina Newport. SHADOAN, CARROLL LEE 'JACK', 68, of Coalfield, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Shadoan was the son of John and Melinda Shadoan, who are deceased. He had served in the United States Army during the Korean War. His family said he was a sports enthusiast and he also loved to play cards. He was a Baptist. Mr. Shadoan is survived by his wife, Wanda Shadoan; four sons, Shaun Shadoan and Warren Shadoan and his wife, Lena, all of Coalfield, and Carroll Lee Shadoan and Roy Wayne Shadoan, both of Ohio; one stepson, Perry Byrd of Coalfield; five grandchildren, Chad Lee Shadoan, Cheri Shadoan and Austin Shadoan, all of Coalfield, Kaleb Chambers of Scott County and Jessie Dane Shadoan of Ohio. He is also survived by two sisters, Irene Adams of Ohio, and Dot Holloway and her husband, Joe, of Florida; and one brother, Boyd Shadoan of Lexington, Ky. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shadoan was preceded in death by another son, Vance Lee Shadoan; one sister, Marie Adams; and five brothers, Joe Shadoan, Lowell Shadoan, Gerald Shadoan, Nowel Shadoan and Eugene Shadoan. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 1, in the chapel of Oliver Springs Mortuary with the Rev. Carlie Duncan and the Rev. Dudley Harness officiating. SHAFER, BIRCH, 93, Tell City, Ind., passed away June 20, 2003 in Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City. Birch was born Jan. 7, 1910 in Frankfort, son of the late Charles G. Shafer and Margaret Aytes Shafer. He married the former Ruth Weatherholt, Aug. 12, 1944. Mr. Shafer retired in 1973 from Westinghouse Air Brakes in Indianapolis, Ind., after 35 years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening and NASCAR racing. He was preceded in death by two sisters Nellie Martin and Idell Wilkerson; and three brothers, Claude, Orel and Bill Shafer. He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years Ruth Weatherholt Shafer of Tell City; several nieces and nephews and a special cousin Myrle Aytes of Frankfort. SHANNON, MR. AMBERS, age 67, of Sunbright, passed away Friday, March 12th, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was a life long member of White Oak Baptist Church of Sunbright and has been an active deacon most of his membership. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Elizabeth Shannon and two brothers, Lones Shannon and Manus Shannon, all of Sunbright. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joann Sexton Shannon. SHANNON , CHARLES -- [ Oakdale, Tn., Jan 3, 19]--27, Southern trainman was instantly killed Saturday afternoon at one o'clock at Helenwood when he was struck by the Royal Palm, crack Southern flyer. SHANNON'S train had stopped at Helenwood and he was taking some bills to the station and walked directly in the path of the speeding passenger train. His body was hurled several hundred feet and mangled. The remains were brought to an undertaking establishment in Harriman. The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at Oakdale, Monday afternoon, the officiating minister being D.H. TAYLOR of Wartburg. SHELLEY, TONY ALLEN, 21, of Petros, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Shelley was born in Oak Ridge on April 28, 1979. Mr. Shelley is survived by his parents, Robert and Letha Breeden Shelley of Petros; his brothers, Sammy Noe and his wife, Kathy, of Knoxville, Benny Noe and his wife, Jennie, and Kenny Shelley and his wife, Amanda, all of Wartburg, Robert D. SHELDON, AUTHORN, a man with a huge heart who loved his family, went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2006 in Oak Ridge Hospital, at the age of 82. He was born Feb. 9, 1924 in Morgan County. He retired from Sheldon Electrical Services in the 70s to be a full time husband, father, grandfather, brother and later great-grandfather. He took great pride in everything he undertook and would only commit himself if he knew he could fulfill his obligations. Mr. Sheldon was a dedicated Christian and loved to sing. For many years he traveled to various churches sharing his testimony and talented voice with the gospel group called "The Songsters". He was a member of the Petros Black Diamond Masonic Lodge No. 625 F. & A.M., also a member of the Kerbela Shriner Temple and the Scottish Rite. He loved the sport of auto racing and often drove a racecar at the Knoxville Speedway. He enjoyed fishing, flower gardening and working on his lawn. He will now rejoice in Heaven with those who have preceded him in death including his father, Joe Sheldon; mother, Willie Ritter Sheldon; brothers, Joe Sheldon, Cleo Sheldon, Winfred Sheldon, Gilbert Sheldon, Wilburn Sheldon and Evan Sheldon; and sister, Eva Cheek. She was better known as "Granny" to everyone who came in contact with her. SIEBER, ALBERT, A native of the Frost Bottom Community, Albert Seiber, 72, of Airport Road, Oliver Springs, died Nov.11 [1988] at his home of cancer.He also had suffered from black lung disease, a relative said.His parents were Harvey and Lucinda Seiber of Frost Bottom.His wife, Mazzie,died in 1974.Seiber worked in the coal mines in the New River area for approximately 38 years. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Union. He was of the Baptist faith.He enjoyed gardening and each summer raised tomatoes and peppers for his children. He also maintained the family cemetery plots. SILVEY, THOMAS W., "T. W.", 77, of Coalfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. Born Feb. 17, 1923, in the Wheat community of Roane County, he was the son of William Robert Silvey and Dorothy Lee Williams Silvey, who are deceased.
Mr. Silvey was a retired carpenter. He had lived in Coalfield since 1943 and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in
Wartburg.After Mr. Silvey died, his family said, one of his grandchildren explained to another grandchild, "Jesus came to take Papaw to Heaven." He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret Jones Silvey; his son, Michael W. SIMPSON, MR. KENNETH, age 77 of the Pilot Mt. Community, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in the Roane County Medical Center. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a true American, who loved his country. Kenneth enjoyed mowing and painting, not only for a living, but as a hobby. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Richardson; brothers: Ray and Cillius Simpson; and parents, Ezra and Florence Simpson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Juanita Collins Simpson of Pilot Mt.; Daughters: Terri Cambron and Tracey Kreis of Pilot Mt., and Debra Dill of Wartburg. Son, Jack Holland of High Point, N.C.; Brothers: A.C. Simpson of Sunbright and George Simpson of Hamilton, OH; Sister: Louise Norris of Chatsworth, GA and Helen Cecil of Spring City, TN. Grandchildren: David and Daniel Dill, Michael Kreis, Anthony Cambron, Brian and Joey Richardson, and Amanda Cambron. He is also survived by several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, September 21, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schubert Funeral Home, Sunbright. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. SIMPSON, RUSSELL GLENN (RUSTY), age 41 of Deer Lodge, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2005 of natural causes, at the home of his Father. Born January 6, 1964 in Oneida, Tn, Rusty professed hope in Christ at an early age, and was of the Baptist faith. His profession was welding and he enjoyed music and outdoor activities. He was preceded in death by Grandparents, Ezra and Florence (Dunaway) Simpson, Jay Norris, and Glenn Bowman; Sister, Glenna Joenia (Dusty) Simpson. He is survived by son, Russell Glenn Simpson II; Daughter, Brittiny Kaye Simpson, both of Sunbright; Step-son, Dustin Alan Beshears and wife Julie of Cookeville; Step-daughter, Tiffiny Ann Hunter and husband, Brandon of Nashville; Mother and Step-father, Roenia (Josie) and Willard Bowman of Deer Lodge; Father and Step-mother, A.C. SINCLAIR, MARY RUTH "RUTHE", 48, formerly of the Coalfield community, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at her home in Calhoun, Ga. She was born Feb. 1, 1956, in Dayton, Ohio, and moved to Tennessee in 1958, with her family. She spent most of her life in the Coalfield area, moving to Georgia in 1984. She was a member of Roswell First Baptist Church in Roswell, Ga.Ruthe loved spending time with her family and friends. She touched many lives during her lifetime. She also loved playing music, writing songs and watching NASCAR.She was preceded in death by her father, Harold James Braden, and her brother, Robert Edward Carroll.In addition to her mother, Mildred Braden, of Coalfield, Ruthe is survived by her daughters, Staci Braden of Coalfield, and Ashley S
