The Human Family Reunion

2007 Annual Human Family Reunion
Sunday, Sept 2nd, 10 a.m.
Community Church at Mill Creek.
*
We are "going back to the old time ways" for this year's reunion. There will be singing by Wilcox and Family, Evergreen Singers, the Mt. Zion Church Singers and others with preaching. Dinner on the ground will follow the service. Everyone is invited to attend; you don't have the name "Human" to attend. We especially would like to see present as well as former members of the Mill Creek Community attend. Bring covered dishes and your lawn chair so you can sit out under the trees and visit. The text below gives the history of the reunion.
Memories of Genevieve (Young) Shannon
as written by Lillian Sue (Cross) Skipper
The first Human Reunion was July 1949 and was held approximately one mile northeast of its present location (known as the Granny-bug Fairchild's home). In March 1939, Arthur and Nola (Human) Young build a new home. He was 43, she was 48. Times were hard and without a doubt they were very proud of what they had accomplished. When the building was completed they decided they would like to invite everyone to come by and rejoice with them in their good fortune. So after getting settled in, they started planning a gathering for all their family and friends. Since their home was small and the families were large they knew this would have to be an outside event. They didn't have a pretty green lawn yet, but there was a nice level spot right next to the house with plenty of shade trees that would make the perfect place. Nola and Arthur had in their minds they would make this not just a day of visiting but one of fellowship with the Lord.
So the work began. Their oldest daughter, Christine, had three children: Onlee, Geneveive and Conlee Human. Gladys, their youngest daughter had two boys: Vaughn L and James Shannon. Bessie had not started her family yet. The grandchildren were young, but they knew how to work and work they did! Underbrush was cut and the ground was cleared and raked clean. A 12 x 12 platform was built under a large maple tree near the county road. Seating was built using oak boards nailed between trees. They also build a long table in the back that would hold plenty of food. Everything was finally ready for the big day and to Nola and Arthur's pleasure a large crowd of people gathered. There was singing, preaching, and testimonies given. Several people just told stories of different times and memories they had made. It was such a joyful day, just as they had hoped for.
For some, that was the only reunion they attended. Genevieve was only six years old, but can still see her Daddy's (Ernest Human) smile as he sat leaning against a porch post, watching the crowd gather. He died two months later on September 29th. The war came and ended. The reunion site changed and the families grew. The children became grownups; the parents got older, and the grandparents passed on, including Nola in 1976 and Arthur in 1982.
Many have faithfully come back to visit with one another year after year, and as long as we have life we must continue to reminisce about those childhood days, and keep making eternal memories at the Human Reunion.
