Transcribed by Gay Mathis
Taken from the 50 Anniversary Edition of The Commercial Paper of Union City, Tennessee
dated 1930
Below is a roster of company I Fourth Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, which was taken from muster rolls of this Company. A number of the boys from this vicinity enlisted in this Company and went to mobilization camp at Knoxville. Tennessee but failed to pass physical examinations. The Company was organized by Captain Harvey C. Alexander assisted by Lieut. John Bell.
The men of this company were enrolled and organized at Union City and Knoxville Tennessee during the month of June, 1898. They were mustered into U. S. service at Knoxville, Tennessee, 7,5,1898. While in camp there, the regiment passed through a military review before Secretary of War, Alger. They broke camp November 28,1898 for Savannah, Georgia. And on December 1st embarked for Cuba, passed on the way San Salvador and Crooked Islands. The vessel ran aground December 6, 1898 just off the coast of Cuba, and then the regiment disembarked and was divided into two detachments, one staying in Casilda and the other, including this Company under Lieut. Col. Harvey H. Hannah, proceeded to Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, thirty miles from the southern coast of the Island. This Company took an important part in assisting in the rehabilitation of the town and country around Sancti Spiritus and of the reorganization of civil authority there, and also in distributing rations to the destitute Cubans during its stay on the Island. The Company sailed for Savannah, Georgia on March 29, 1899 and encamped at Savannah until May 6, 1899, on which date it was mustered out of service.
