Perry County, Tennessee

Cemeteries

We are blessed to have volunteers who have spent many countless hours recording and transcribing the cemeteries in Perry County.  These transcriptions have been put on various web pages.  I have found that using these transcriptions can be tricky and confusing at times, since some cemeteries have a couple names and sometimes different cemeteries have the same name.

I am aware of several different major cemetery transcriptions that have been done for Perry County:

  • The Works Project Administration (WPA) did transcriptions in the 1930s.  I do not know of an online transcription of this work.

  • David Donahue did several transcriptions, mostly in 1999, 2001 and 2004.  These were recorded, transcribed and posted on 2 TNGenWeb sites:

        *    oldest Perry County cemetery site organized by river location;

        *    newest site, now completely searchable;

  • There have also been individuals who have gone out and transcribed individual cemeteries.  If I become aware of one of these transcriptions, these also will be included in this project.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you want to do a search for your ancestor and you don't know what cemetery they are buried in, I would do 2 separate searches:

1)   go to the TNGenWeb search engine on this site (click here).  Then enter in the name of your ancestor "without quote marks".  This will search all the Bowen books.

2)  then go to the new Perry County cemetery searchable site. (click here). This will find all the cemeteries that David Donahue transcribed.

Once all the cemeteries are online here on this site, you will be able to search from this one site and know what cemetery they are buried in.

Eventually, though, I would like all updated information to be posted on the new TnGenWeb searchable site.  This site has the capability to have a GPS map of the cemetery, pictures of the cemetery and tombstones and lots of space for notes and corrections.

So we will be starting an in-depth examination and cross-reference between the various transcriptions that were done.  This chart is shown below.    When a name of a cemetery is highlighted in purple, that means that the comparison of transcriptions for that cemetery is complete and online on this website.  If you click on the name of that particular cemetery, you will be taken to that cemetery's page.  This will be a work in progress and will undoubtably take a while.   If you are interested in helping with this project, please e-mail me, Jan Monnin, your Perry County Tennessee coordinator.
