1890 Veteran's Schedule

For the 1890 federal population census, there was an additional schedule that was taken.   It was enumerated at the same time as the population schedules.  It was called "Special Schedule - Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Widows, etc."  And it specifically enumerated "Persons who served in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of the United States during the war of the rebellion (who are survivors) and widows of such persons."

So this schedule was supposed to be for just soldiers who served for the Northern or US Army.  But as you will see, many times the Tennessee enumerators included soldiers who served in the Confederate.   This schedule is particularly valuable as the 1890 federal population census schedule was mostly lost due to fire and flood.

From National Archives and Records Administration, 1890.  Microfilm Series M123.

(Transcriber’s Notes – the schedules often times were hard to read.  I transcribed them as I read them, but it's likely that there are misspellings.  Enumerators would many times spell out the names as they sounded, so that would create errors in spellings as well.   If anything below is blank, then it was also blank on the original schedule.  Thank you, Jan Monnin).
