My African American gr-grandfather John H. Mitchell was born inIllinois in 1848 and in 1878 married Lottie (Charlottie?) Breden (b.1861, IL). 1880 IL Census lists Lottie as Black also, though thereis a question among family members as to whether the Bredens mighthave been White. John and Lottie's fathers (Mitchell/Breden) wereboth from Tennessee, County unknown at this time.
