TRIBUTE OF RESPECT Your committee would beg leave to offer the following in regard to the death of our worthy brother Asa Newport.
Elder Asa Newport was born in Knox county, Tennessee, October 7th., 1802, and died at his residence in Rhea County, Tenn., December 15th, 1876 - constant in his friendships, and open, manly and magnanimous in his dislikes. He was frank and candid, and in his word absolute reliance was reposed. He had the warmest sympathy for the destitute, and his ear was ever open to the appeals of the poor. To those sterling virtues were united the experience and practice of the religion of Jesus Christ. He joined the church at Bullock's Pen (afterwards called Hind's Valley), in November 1829, and lived a most acceptable member until his death, beautifully exemplifying the character of a true christian. After struggling against his impressions of duty, he began his ministry about the year 1832 as a licentiate, and was ordained to the full work of the ministry, July 1838. He was chosen pastor of Hind's Valley Church in the year 1840, and served them acceptably in that capacity until his death. He was faithful and punctual in his attendance at church and liberal in his contributions to all of its enterprises. He ardently loved the church, and delighted in its spiritual success; and that religion which had been his solace in life, was his support in death. He seemed to fully realize the power of that promise. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon Thee." He labored for nearly half a century in the ministry, and was several times chosen moderator of the Hiwassee Association, and at the time of his death enjoyed the affection of the entire brotherhood, and shared the full confidence of all who knew him. But his life work is finished, and he has been called home to glory by the voice of our redeemer; called home from this world of woe, selfishness and deceit, to that celestial world above, where the redeemed, the ransomed host forever bask in the glorious effulgence (sic) of "Him who doeth all things well." We will miss brother Newport greatly, but our loss is his eternal gain. In view of the above facts,
Resolved 1st, that while we as an association bow in humble resignation to the providence of God, we express the deepest sorrow in giving up one so devoted to the church, and that for him we will ever cherish the most grateful memory.
2d. That we tender our warmest sympathy to the aged and much afflicted wife, children, relatives and friends of brother Newport, and pray that their faith in Christ may mitigate their sorrow.
3d. That this "Tribute of Respect" be published in our minutes, and that a blank page in our Association record be set apart to contain the same.

OBITUARY Elder Martin Sharp, son of Meredith and Elizabeth Sharp, was born November 1, 1823, in Grainger county, Tennessee. In his second year his parents removed to Roane county, while society was in its rough, confused state, and the people were without present opportunities and advantages. It will not be thought singular if, midst such surroundings, one of young Sharp's temperament was found in the lead of the fun-loving. rowdying, drinking and frolicking, though honest, pioneer boys; it is certain that such was the fact: but in 1842, under the ministry of Elder Geo. Luttrell, God called him by his grace, and revealed in him his son Jesus Christ. This change was too patent to all to pass unnoticed, as it was manifest in all of his conduct and conversation. In September, 1842, he joined the Baptist Church of Christ, in session the third Saturday, at Pleasant Grove meeting house, and was baptized by Elder L.B. Johnson. Brother Sharp soon developed rare gifts, singing, public prayer and exhortation; so that he was soon recognized by the Church as a rising leader in Israel, having at once reached the front in usefulness and in the confidence of the brotherhood, which maintained and increased to the end of forty years of Church membership. He was properly called a sweet singer in Israel, and in his earnest exhortations, like our bold eagle, careened in the midst of the tempest, and in impassioned native eloquence rent the veil covering the sinner's heart, then pointing him to the cross of Christ as the only refuge of the soul burdened by sin. He was chosen Clerk of theChurch, which service he performed acceptably for about ten years. He was licensed to preach about 1856. He removed to Meigs county in 1865, and united with the Baptist Church at Pisgah, and by it was called to ordination, and came under imposition of the hands of presbytery composed of Elders A.D. Morrison and J.B. McCallon. He was soon called to the pastorate of Pisgah Church. In 1869 he returned to Paint Rock Valley, and was chosen pastor of his mother Church, which he filled acceptably to the Church and creditably to himself, except an interval of two years, to the end of his life. He was chosen Clerk of the Association in 1876, which was continued till his death; which sad event transpired on Friday, June 6, 1884, 10 o'clock.P.M. The final illness was short, but attended with great sufferings. The chain is broken, the link is not lost, only out of reach for the present. He "rests from his labors, by which he obtained a good report of them without." In his doctrine, he proclaimed salvation by grace, giving all of the glory to God. A Baptist in the strict sense, yet charity for all. He is gone, to Grainger no bolder son was born; to Reare (Roane?), no more patriotic son was given; Paint Rock never had a more devoted member; the Association, no more acceptable minister. A considerate husband, an indulgent and exemplary father. Brethren, be ye also ready, the summons will soon come.

It will be remembered that, at the session of our Association, held at Caney Ford meeting house, on Friday before the 4th Saturday in Sept., 1875, Sulphur Sprints, Bethel, Hopewell and Caney Ford Churches asked for letters of dismission from our body. Answer: The churches asking letters of dismission have, as we understand, severed their connection with this body; therefore we have no control over the. We therefore drop them out of our union, according to Article 16, Section 4, of our constitution, but we earnestly and affectionately request them to reconsider their action and let us live together in harmony. They have refused to do. But in pursuance of their design they went into Big Emory Association; Haley's Grove, Bethlehem and Pine City Churches also went into said association. Bethel, Mt. Zion and Grassy cove Churches divided. The condition remains unchanged. If there is not any reconciliation of these divided churches, and with our body and those churches which were dropped, we believe that a correspondence will be inconsistent. All of which is respectfully submitted. Signed -
