My husband`s ggg grandfather, Thomas Marlow Sr. and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Ward were married in Rhea Co. on 11-3- 1824. He was born in VA. They then went to Campbell Co. TN. Maybe the Ward family was originally from there? We believe his brother, Reubin also married Susan Ward there on 12-13-1824. I`m not sure if they stayed or left. This is all relatively new material found by our cousin. Ayy more relatives out there?

Here's my migration, taken from the Reece family bible (dated 1828).

"I started to Mo. Nov. 19, 1835 and landed on Blackwater Johnson Co, Mo. the 9th of Feb. 1836" written in the bible by Isham Reece.

All told, here's who came:

1) Jesse Reece, b. ~1760 in VA (shown as Reice in 1830 Rhea Co. Census)
1) Elizabeth ?, b. ~1780
2) Isham Reece b. May 16, 1806 in Grainger Co. E. Tn.
2) Mahaley Thompson b. Nov. 30th 1804 in L(s)ea Co. VA (as shown in Bible)

The first child born in MO was:
3) James McDonal Reece b. Aug 12, 1836 in Johnson Co. MO

There has been speculation that some other children of Jesse Reece also migrated, but I have found no hard evidence of this yet.

My great grandfather George W. Pritchett left Rhea Co. for Oklahoma in 1909. George was the son of William and Priscilla Essex Pritchett. William had lived in Rhea Co. from 1859 until his death 13 March 1916. Priscilla died in Rhea Co. 11 May 1905. William and Priscilla where married 1 April 1863. Priscillas parents were William and Mary Long Essex. They where married in Rhea Co. 4 Nov 1838.

William and Priscilla had the following children: George W., James Lindsay, William J., and Polly. William was married to Laura and according to my grandfather he went to Georgia.

James Lindsay Pritchett married Mary Texana McMillan and had the following children: Inda Bessie, Samuel A., Charles Benton, James Harvey, Jesse, George Levi, Robert, Alvin H., Joseph Manuel, Johnny, Daniel, Milton. James and his family also went to Oklahoma in 1909 and appear on the 1910 McClain Co. census. However they returned to Rhea Co. not long after that and many of James and Marys descendants still live in the county.

George married Martha McMillan 28 Feb 1886 and had the following children all born in Rhea Co: Andrew J., Wealthy Ann, James H., Joseph, Oscar William, Minta, Carol Roy, Lydia, and Viola. Wealthy died in Tennessee before the move to Oklahoma. The family settled in McClain Co., Oklahoma. Minta and Carol Roy died in just a few years. During the depression James H. Pritchett moved his wife Bertha Johnson Pritchett and his children to Eddy Co., New Mexico for several years and then to Fresno Co., CA. Oscar also came to Fresno Co. but most of the other children stayed in Oklahoma.

My father, James Edward Pritchett used to say that when they left Oklahoma they looked like the Grapes of Wrath except the car in the movie looked better than the one they actually had. They where very poor and worked at anything they could. James H. and Bertha eventually bought a boarding house. Their children have all been prosperous and hard working.

James and Elizabeth Casey were in Rhea County, according to a tax list, by 1823. Elizabeth is shown as E. Caisy in the 1830 census, suggesting that James was deceased. A court record in Rhea in the summer of 1830 releases him from paying poll tax. Does anyone know what this means? He was probably in his mid to late sixties in 1830 because he was over 45 in 1810 (shown in the fragment of the Grainger Co., TN census that survives.) I didn't think the poll tax extended to men over 60. Does anyone know the specific law?

In 1840, Elizabeth and some of her children were inHamilton Co. A release of dower, signed as Elizabeth Lewis (implying a second marriage?), specified that she was the wife of James Casey, deceased. Their children who were listed in the 1839 release of dower were William (who I believe settled in McMinn Co. at an early date); James, John, Samuel Henry, Sterling (called Star), Elizabeth who married George Watson, Nancy who married Benjamin McKenzie and lived in McMinn Co., and Sarah who married what looks like Ruse.

James' sister, Elizabeth Casey Blackwood, and her husband William Blackwood also lived in Rhea County. I would like to know the names of the Blackwood children and what happened to them. The Isaac Bullard family listed in the 1830 Rhea census is probably a nephew of James'. One of his sisters, Agnes, married John Bullard.

In 1842, some of the children of James and Elizabeth Casey: James, Samuel Henry, Sterling, and Elizabeth Watson and her husband George, moved to Webster (soon to be Wright) Co., Missouri.

I would like to learn what happened to their mother Elizabeth Casey (Lewis?). I have never been able to locate her maiden name either. Any help gratefully accepted. Thanks.

John Henry Blevins (1855-1929), the youngest child of John Torbett Blevins and his wife, Florence Elizabeth (Pass) Blevins (1864-1915), moved their family from Spring City, Rhea, TN to Lake Creek, Lamar, TX in the late1890s. John was a farmer. His house was once featured in the Paris, TX newspaper. They had eight children. Luna (1883-1887) is buried in or near Spring City. Roy (1884-1968) was a barber in Paris, TX. Rufo moved back to Tennessee where he was a barber. Lawrence (1892-1954) Moved to Memphis, TX where he was a farmer. Lester (1893-1953) was a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, a carpenter, and a farmer. Clayton (1898-1973) inherited the family farm. Robert (1899-1900) died in infancy. Paul (1902-1983) moved to Memphis, TX where he was a barber. After Elizabeth died, John moved to Memphis, TX, to live with Lawrence, where he eventually remarried. A niece describes him as a "tall, good-looking, gray-haired, southern gentleman." Clayton's son, Bill Blevins, still operates the family farm. Lester was my grandfather.

Jiles/Giles Smith and Sarah Singleton, dt of John and Elizabeth Singleton of Rhea Co., TN. were in Barry County, MO for the 1850 Federal Census. Jiles was the son of Charles and Nancy Jacobs Smith and was from Union Co., South Carolina to Rhea County. Charles was the son of James and Mary George Smith of Union County, SC and I think the George family may have had ties to Rhea County as well as did the Smith and Singleton family. John and Elizabeth Singleton died in Rhea County, TN., and they are listed on the 1830 Rhea County Census. It is interesting to look at the 1830 Rhea County, Tennessee census and pick out the names that are Barry Co., MO. names. It's really unbelievable how many of these families moved over to Missouri and settled in Southern Missouri.
