All information is submitted by Kenneth Haas who adds; “I do not vouch for all of the below I have deeds and other records for the Goad but most Morrison data is from the internet.”
John GOAD was born 1729 in Richmond County, Virginia. He was a a brother to Joannah (GOAD) Sevier, mother of Gen/Gov John SEVIER. He and several of his brothers/cousins/uncle took the oath in 1777 Pittsylvania County, VA as did Patrick MORRISON. John's oldest son William married Betsy (Elizabeth) MORRISON in Pittsylvania. William then joined his first cousin, John Sevier, in the State of Franklin area. His pension application in 1832 Hawkins County asserted he had fought at King's Mountain.
Father John took his most of his family to that area in 1782 and they settled on Bay's Mountain near today's Kingsport. It is a beautiful nature preserve today. The GOADs built an entire "mountain village" there complete with a school and church. John died ca 1793 and his wife Margaret probably ca 1802. All the sons except William left in ca 1803, going to Hopkins County, Kentucky except Gabriel who went to Lincoln/Casey County, KY, then Perry/Crawford County, IN; John, Jr. to Posey County, IN after Hopkins; Lewis and Peter stayed in western Kentucky. William received a 640 acre grant from the State of North Carolina for his military service, bought up more land later so had no reason to leave East Tennessee.
I do not think the William in 1766 Rowan could have been this William as he was only about age thirteen then (born ca 1753). There were several William GOADs by then. Old William in ca late 1830s re-married to Mary HALL, age 21, and fathered two sons William and Peter. Most GOADs in the Sullivan/Washington/Hawkins area today descend from this Peter GOAD. GOAD is often rendered “GOARD” or “GOURD” and one Kings Mountain history has William as “GOOD”. Many census indices have GOADs under “GOOD”. My GOADs mother said the people in the Blue Ridge of Virginia often called it “GOURD” even into the 20th century.
A number of Pittsylvania families moved to Sullivan by 1790. Bryant Ward Nowlin, Vaxchal Dillingham, John Dalton, Abel Morgan, Stephen Bennett come to mind. Some had a GOAD connection.
The first William above had a son Reuben GOAD who did not go to East Tennessee but to Smith County, TN ca 1803. Among his descendants was Gov. Frank GOAD Clement of the 1960s and his son Congressman Robert Clement of recent years. A descendant of John, Jr. of Posey County, IN was Louis GOAD, vice pres. of General Motors in the 1940s.
I wrote a book on all branches of the GOAD family. My mother was a GOAD born in Carroll County, Virginia. Our ancestor, Robert, was first cousin to the first William above.
This listing of William "GOOD" on the 1812 Tax List of Capt. Everitt's Company was almost certanly William GOAD, the Kings Mt veteran and first cousin of Gov. John Sevier.
NOTE: Under discussion. Claim there Were TWO Patrick MORRISONS with Rowan County one confused with Pittsylvania one ???
Patrick MORRISON died Wilson County, TN in 1810, wife Ann in 1838. He was a son of William and Margaret Morrison who lived in Rowan County, North Carolina. (now Iredell).
Son James MORRISON born 1758 (by first wife) married Mary BARNARD, daughter of John and Anna (CARR) Barnard, father of John was Francis. James MORRISON lived in the Kingsport, TN area as did GOADs. William GOAD’s parents and most siblings joined William in East Tennessee (then North Carolina) in 1782. They lived on Bays Mountain. BARNARDs married GOAD-related Daltons in Hawkins County, TN for decades after 1800.
William MORRISON born 1778 North Carolina, died in Alabama, buried in Clay County married Elizabeth SNIDER, says father James MORRISON born 1738. How related ?
Patrick MORRISON had four sons - James MORRISON born 1758 and David MORRISON born 1743, who (each) married BARNARD sisters. James MORRISON to Roane County, TN, John MORRISON and William MORRISON. Daughters were Jinnett MORRISON, and Betsy (Margaret) MORRISON. Betsy married William GOAD, Kings Mountain veteran from Pittsylvania Co, VA and Sullivan and Hawkins Counties, TN. He was born ca 1753, first cousin to Gen. John SEVIER.
One source says William MORRISON born Rowan 1757 was the eldest son. Conflicts with the above. William went to Wilson County, TN ca 1780. Had children Daniel MORRISON, Margaret MORRISON [REASONS], Charity MORRISON [JONES], Mary PARR.
Patrick MORRISON born Tuckahoe, Scotland 1719, came to America with brother James MORRISON and cousin George MORRISON. Patrick MORRISON, married (1) Elizabeth SMITH who died in Greene County, TN (2) Ann FOSTER. They earlier lived in Sumner County. George MORRISON was killed at Kings Mountain. Patrick MORRISON enlisted in Rowan in 1778 and was a captain in the 1st Rowan regiment. This seemingly conflicts with him (or another Patrick MORRISON?) taking the oath in Pittsylvania in 1777. Patrick MORRISON married Ann FOSTER 9 Aug 1768 in Rowan.
On 4 Aug 1776, Patrick MORRISON bought land from John COCK in Pittsylvania, witnessed by Thomas GOAD and John GOAD and Abel MORGAN. John GOAD was the father of William GOAD who married Betsy MORRISON and Thomas GOAD was William GOAD´s older brother. John COCK married Elizabeth GOAD, sister to John GOAD. Abel MORGAN too, went to East Tennessee and lived among the GOADs.
When John GOAD, Sr, father of John GOAD and Elizabeth GOAD above, left a will in 1771 Bedford County, VA, he left his rifle to young James WALDROP (many spellings). James GOAD later married Margaret MORRISON and was an ensign in the company of Capt. Thomas VINCENT in 1788 Sullivan County, TN. In that same company were the following. ????
In 1787, the inhabitants of “the western country” (State of Franklin) sent a petition to the governor of North Carolina. Signing were Patrick, William, John and James MORRISON, Patrick listed next to Thomas VINCENT, Abel MORGAN and Benjamin HENSLEE (HENSLEY), all from Pittsylvania. A bit further were listed Easleys, Lights, Shipleys, all connected somewhat to the GOADS, and William GOAD, John “GOARD” Jr. Gabriel “Gode”, all sons of John GOAD, Sr. Patrick was listed quite far from the three sons listed together. Joseph “WALDRAP” was another on the list. Thomas “BENNET” was a cousin to the younger GOADs.
