Lost Friends

My name is Shirley Mozingo Slaughterbeck and I believe Opal Mozingo is buried in East Hill Cemetery. I believe she is my great-uncle's daughter. She was born on Aug. 1, 1905 and died on Aug. 30, 1914…9yrs.29days old. She died of typhoid fever. Her father is Frank Mozingo born in Delaware,Ohio on Jan.9,1884. Her mother is Bertie Perkins born in Indiana . Opal was buried on Sept.2,1914. Could you please contact me if you have any information about her, I received this information from the Rush County Health Dept (death records) pg.61-book5.I'm not sure why this information would be in Indiana records and possibly not in yours. I was browsing in Sullivan County and happened upon your website about finding lost friends. I have been thinking alot lately about a girl that was my bestfriend when I was in the 3rd thru 6th grade I think…it may have just been the 5th grade. At that time she was taken by her mother (who had another last name as she was remarried) and step father to Florida to live. Her name was Mary Jane Helton. She went to Andrew Johnson School in Kingsport, Tn. She would be about 55 years old now. I do not know how to find out what her mothers name was so that I can investigate names in Florida…also maybe could find marriage records if I knew the place they moved to in Florida. I have been looking for sometime on an article that was featured in the paper years ago. I and my nephew looked through Microfilm at the library with no success. My Father Ralph J. Dingus played ball for Dobbins Bennett team. The featured article was on how he was the youngest player to be offered a contract with the Red Socks this had to be in the 40's. Would you have any suggestion as to where I could find this article as his family was from Kingsport. His father's name if that would help was Oscar Dingus. I have already contacted the Red socks to see if they could help me but had no response.

My father was adopted in 1945 from the Tennessee Children's Home in Nashville He has always contended that he has brothers and sisters somewhere I would really like to find them He and a younger sister were the only children in the family to be adopted out He seems to remember a brother by the name of Walter or Charles Davidson that lived in a small town outside of Kingsport Their fathers name was Charles and the mothers name was Francis any information you may be able to give me would be greatly appreciated. My paternal grandfather disappeared sometime after 1933. After my father died I found an address book of his which listed his father, in 1933, as follows:

Arthur Melville BROWN
236 Taylor St.
Blountville, Tenn.; or Knoxville, Tenn.; or Bristol, Tenn

What I know: he was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Aug 4, 1871, died ?? He married Minnie Boyden DUNCAN of Springfield, Mass. in 1890 at Hartford, Conn. He had sons - Walter Edwin Brown, Leroy Raymond Brown, and a daughter, Eva Ethel Brown. He was a "rabble rouser" (union organizer). All family members are deceased except my sister and me. No knows what happened to him. Was there reason for him to be in northeastern Tenn., at that time, regarding his occupation?

I just this week connected to Internet and was browsing and of course wanted to know what was on in regard to Kingsport … I left Kingsport in July of 1959, I lived on Steadman St in Highland Park and had the most wonderful girl friend in the world. He last name was Smith and she lived down the street from me a couple of houses, her father's name was Melvin Smith. We attended Dickerson School together. I think her first name was Linda but I am really not sure… I wish someone could help me locate her since I loved her so much, she was such a friend and I am not 53 years old and she is about the same age.

As I was signing off I thought of her name, Joan Smith, she had a brother named Jack who was much older. Please help if you can….Also, I would like to correspond with people in Kingsport. That place is very dear to my heart.

Kincheloe Mill

While researching my roots, I found out about a place called The Kincheloe Mill. I believe it was Washington Co. Tn. I am interested in the history and the Kincheloe's that once owned it. Can someone help me? thanks, Glenda

Seneker Cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennesse

My sister Gwendolyn Collier Johnson and I, Margaret Collier Furry are interested in finding out about our ancestor's. We were born in Bristol, but our father was active duty military and we ended up in the NW USA. Our mother was Margaret Louise Carmody. Her first born daughter, father and grandfather and so on back in time are buried in Seneker Cemetery on what was Deck Valley Rd. The road may now be Seneker Lane. We did not see it listed in Sullivan co. Cemeterys. My mother's Cousin married Paul Combs. Mom called her Georgielee. Some am not sure of the acurate spelling. Is it possible the cemetery is listed under another name?

Vance, Tennessee

My grandmother was born August 1, 1896 at Vance, TN. She tells me it was in the Bristol area. I have found on the 1895 TN Atlas that it was in the northeast section of Sullivan County. I was trying to get an accurate pinpoint on a map, although that may not be possible. Also, trying to discover how long the town/community existed, what happened, i.e. is it actually still known as Vance, or did it become part of what is now the actual city of Bristol, TN?

Mill Point

Grandparents W.T. Hays and Emma Isabel Minga married 11-14-1895 at Mill Point, which I believe is in Sullivan County. Interested in identifying its location as thoroughly as possible. Might provide help on tracing ancestry of both.

Fall Branch

I have been looking for my family information but keep getting conflicting information as to which county to check in. I know that my grandfather was born in Fall Branch but no one (so far) can tell me which county it is in. It's really hard to tell on the map and I want to continue to research my WHITE line.

I have checked my map, and it appears to me that Fall Branch is in Washington County, albeit very close to Sullivan. And also appears it may have a south western section in Greene County. Anybody with more information on this please contact either me or Kim White.

Fall Branch lies in Washington County, TN. However, the Greene, Washington and Sullivan County lines meet at a point on Chimney Top Mountain just across the creek from Fall Branch. You can actually be in Sullivan, Washington and Greene in a matter of minutes but the actual town of Fall Branch is in Washington.

Indian Creek

Can you tell me where Indian Creek was in 1784? It was a tributary of the Holston River, and was located a few miles from Booher Creek, a tributary of Indian Creek. Any towns near here? Can you direct me to a map that shows these names? My 4th great grandfather lived on a farm here.

Dumplin Creek Baptist Church

This is really an old lost place…The Dumplin Creek Baptist Church, Jefferson Co TN, minutes refer to a church in 1797 which is the church where he came from along with a James Mainor (Manard), John Cate "seener" states he was a member of "long Islant Church" a Bro. Condra apparently sent more than one letter which Dumplin refused to accept John Cate seener and James Mainor. This church appears to have been in the Sullivan Co area. I have been in contact with the Southern Baptist Archives in Nashville. They are most helpful but could not find the "long Islant Church" or Long Island Church of the Holston?
Would appreciate all the help I can get, we need the proof.

Women's College - Bristol

I am not sure where to post a query for this so I click your email address for help. Forgive me if it is the wrong place. I am looking for a college called Bristol Women's College. My father says his mother, Evelyn Bozeman went to college there and to become a nurse. I am trying to locate this college to see if she was there and if there are any photos from past classes. It would have been appx. around 1915 or so bouts. Any help would be appreciated.

Saw you were looking for this cemetery. The directions that I have are printed as follows:

Located near Piney Flats. Turn right to the north at the Piney Flats Crossroads, then turn west on Pickens Bridge Road, go about 3 1/2 miles to new Bethel Road and turn right to the north and the Church and Cemetery are on the right.

The short 2 days I was in this area, I can tell you I am lost just typing these directions. You mentioned a David Hughes. I have seen two listed in the book that I have, they are as follows: David Hughes d. 19 Jun 1849, 92y (Rev. War) David M. Hughes 11 Nov 1838 15 Mar 1862.
This is all that I have. Hope it helps.

I served as the pastor of the New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats, TN from 1994-1996. I wrote a history of the church. My son has published an index of the cemetery. The cemetery index is available for $30 per copy.

DeVault Bridge

I am researching my husband's Devault family which originated in the Bristol tn/VA area. My Aunt in Johnson City TN tells me there is a DeVault Bridge and Pumping Station on the Bristol highway. Do you know who it is named for?
