ALMANY, BOBBY L. Bobby L. (Bob) Almany of New Canton, VA, died Tuesday, Dec 5, 2000. He was a retired Virginia State Trooper and was preceded in death by his wife, Janis Cowan Almany. He is survived by two sons: Charles H. Almany of Powhatan, VA, and R. Paul Almany and his wife, Mary, of Glen Allen, VA; one daughter: Alison A. Harding and her husband, Andy, of Powhatan; and three grandchildren: Amanda, Dillon and Summer. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Dearing officiating. BAILEY, JAMES PERRY James Perry Bailey, 78, of Blountville died as the result of an accident on Tuesday, Dec. 12. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Ollie Bailey; and brothers, Charles and John Bailey. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marceline; daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Rob Johnson of Kingsport; and step-grandchildren, Marti Johnson of Kingsport and Todd Johnson of Johnson City. He retired from Aladdin Plastics in Surgoinsville. Jim was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Pacific. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Blountville. BAILEY, JAMES PERRY James Perry Bailey, 78, of Blountville, TN, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home from injuries sustained in an accident. He had lived most of his life in Sullivan County, TN, was a retired employee with Aladdin Plastic and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blountville and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Ollie Bailey. Survivors: his wife of 54 years, Marceline B. Bailey; daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Rob Johnson of Kingsport; step-grandchildren, Marti Johnson of Kingsport and Todd Johnson of Johnson City; two sisters, Kathleen Jordan and Nannie Kate White, both of Bristol, TN; three brothers: Harry Lee Bailey, Bristol, VA, Ellis Bailey, Crystal River, Fla., and Frank Bailey, Jackson, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at the graveside in the East Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Clay Austin officiating. BAILEY, WILLARD EARL Willard Earl Bailey, 81, of Bristol, TN, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Campbell County, TN, a son of the late Thomas Sanford Bailey and Della May Welch Bailey, and had lived in Bristol since 1950. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Naval Reserves as a master chief petty officer after 36 years of active and reserve service. He attended LaFollette High School and Hiwassee College and received his B. S. degree from the University of Tennessee, with a major in agriculture and a minor in mechanics. He received his masters degree in vocational education from the University of Tennessee and taught in the Sullivan County School System for over 34 years. He was a member of the Tennessee, Virginia, Sullivan County and National Education Associations and was a charter member and charter president of the South Holston Ruritan Club. He was a member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church and the Men's Club and the United Sunday School Class of the church. He is survived by his wife, Clara Compton Bailey; a son, Ronald E. Bailey of Hong Kong; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening in the chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Laura Rasor officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. The committal service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery. Entombment will follow. Mr. Ball, 58, of Bristol, TN, formerly of Honaker, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Bristol, TN. He was born in Russell County, a son of the late Carlos and Amanda Taylor Ball. He was an Army veteran, a disabled roofer and had lived in Bristol for the past five years. Survivors include one son, Randy Ball of Florida; one sister, Geraldine Johnson of Honaker; two nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; and one great-nephew. BAKER, MARGARET J. Margaret J. Baker, 74, of 112 Wright Lane, Bristol, TN, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at her home. A native of Fairfax, VA, she had lived in the Bristol area for the past 23 years. She was a retired employee with the Holiday Inn with 11 years of service and was the widow of Daniel Upton Baker. Survivors include a son, Daniel "Danny" Riley Baker of Bristol, TN; a daughter-in-law, Kathy L. Baker; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kathy Jo and Chris Church, both of Bluff City; a grandson, Daniel Charles Baker of Bristol, TN, and a great-grandson, Jonathan Riley Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Wright officiating. A private burial will follow in the East Hill Cemetery. BAUMGARDNER, CHARLES ELMER Charles Elmer "Charlie" Baumgardner of Bristol, VA, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in the Hospice House. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a son of the Charles W. and Laura Harris Baumgardner. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, a member of the DAV Chapter 40 and past commander and member of the Honor Guard. He was a member and deacon of Bradley Street Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Shumate Baumgardner; three sons, Donald Paul Baumgardner and Ronald Charles Baumgardner and wife, Tanya, all of Bristol, VA, and Randell Jack Baumgardner and wife, Fran, of Portand, OR, two sisters: Ada Barlow of Bristol, VA, and Mae Daniels, of Witchita, KS; one brother: Walter Baumgardner of Bristol, VA; two grandchildren: Mike Baumgardner of Meadowview, VA, and Angie Thomas of Charlotte, NC; three great-grandchildren: Travis Baumgardner, Lauren Baumgardner and Chance Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. BEYER, ROBERT VELATI Robert Velati Beyer, 76, of Bristol, TN, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence. He was a native of Atlantic City, NJ, and moved to Bristol from Washington, DC six years ago. He was a retired candy maker and an owner of Velati Candy Company. He attended St. Anne's Catholic Church and was preceded in death by a son, Gary Beyer. Survivors include his wife: Anna T. "Jean" Savacool Beyer; daughter: Catherine Simons of Bristol, TN; three sons: Lt. Craig Beyer of Bristol, TN, Gerald Beyer of Woodbridge, VA, and David Beyer of Manassas, VA; two brothers: Dr. Brook A. Beyer of Bethesda, MD, and William L. Beyer of Silver Springs, MD; sister: Ann Mooney of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and seven grandchildren. BLEVINS, DEANIE OLINGER MARION, VA -- Deanie Olinger Blevins, 57, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Blevins and her father, Thomas E. Olinger. She is survived by her mother, Sue Olinger of Marion, Va.; five sisters, Ruth Farmer, Linda Snavely, Peggy Olinger and Tammy Testerman, all of Marion, and Doris Olinger of Abingdon, VA; four brothers, Tommy Lee Olinger and Jimmy Olinger, both of Marion, Bobby Olinger of Chilhowie, VA, and Don Olinger of Saltville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Cemetery in Marion. BLEVINS, MAMIE LEE WYATT PULASKI, VA -- Mamie Lea Wyatt Blevins, 69, departed this life early Saturday morning, Dec. 23, 2000, at Pulaski Community Hospital after a long illness. She was born March 11, 1931, in Sullivan County, TN, the daughter of the late Franklin Wyatt and Virginia Lou Phillips Wyatt. She was a devoted mother and beloved grandmother and great-grandmother of a very large family residing around the Pulaski community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Avery Blevins; one grandson, Lee Blevins; four brothers, Clay Wyatt and Ray Wyatt, both of Ohio, Glenn Wyatt and Harold "Doc" Wyatt, both of Bristol, TN; and one sister, Margaret Gentry of Cookeville, TN. She attended the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Dianne) Thompson; five sons, James Franklin Blevins, Freddie Wayne Blevins, Larry Junior Blevins and Ronald Gene Blevins, all of Pulaski, and Roy Lee Blevins of Grahams Forge; four sisters, Bill Johnson, Sheryl Trivett and Hattie Mae Rush, all of Bristol, TN, and Marie Moore of Stone Mountain, GA; one brother, Claude Wyatt of Bristol, TN; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church, Denton's Valley (Washington County) with the Rev. Dale Akers, the Rev. Floyd Nelson and Evangelist Danny McGlothlin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. BOGART, FLORENCE TILSON Florence Tilson (Flo) Bogart of Bristol, TN, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Miss Bogart was a native of Erwin, TN, and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was a retired teacher from Tennessee High School. Miss Bogart was a member of First Baptist Church of Bristol where she worked in the library. Survivors include her sister, Eva Bogart of Johnson City, TN. BOLEN, ELBERT H. NEMOURS, WV -- Elbert H. Bolen Sr., 90, P. O. Box 44, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Mountain View Retirement Home, Lebanon, VA. Born in Maybeury, WV, he was the son of the late Archie Lee and Ethel Hensley Bolen, and the widower of Lahoma Pardue Bolen. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church, Pocahontas, VA, a member of the Pocahontas Lions Club and retired from Lilly Construction Co. as a welder. Surviving are one daughter, Debra Leonard of Abingdon; six grandchildren, Christian Barbour Price and Rodney Wayne Barbour, both of Abingdon, Tammy Barbour McCracken of Lebanon; Karen Bolen Morris of Nemours, Melanie Bolen Edwards of Glen Burnie, MD, and Joel Anthony Bolen of Gautier, MS.; and five great-grandchildren. He was born in Bristol, TN, a son of Evelyn Martin Booher and the late Roy Lee Booher and attended Norfolk Avenue Church of God in Bristol, VA. He was formerly employed as a printer with Interchex, was an avid fisherman and greatly enjoyed the lake. In addition to his mother, Donald's family includes a son, Lee Booher of Bristol, VA; three sisters, Shirley Clark and Mary Greer, both of Bristol, TN, and Anna Gunning of Bristol, VA; six brothers, Wayne Booher, Ronnie Booher and Tommy Booher, all of Bristol, TN, Phillip Booher and John Booher, both of Bristol, VA, and Edward Booher of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. BOOHER, E. CHARLENE E. Charlene Booher, 57, of Maryville, TN, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at her home. A native of Bristol, she had lived in Maryville for the past 11 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a special mom, grandma and a wonderful friend. She was and is a very loved person and will be missed greatly but we all know she's with the Lord now and even happier. BRIDGEMAN, JOSIE M. Josie M. Bridgeman, 91, of Tremont Avenue, Bristol, TN, died on Dec. 29, 2000, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Rufus and Mattie McNamara, and had been in the Bristol area most of her life. She was a homemaker and the widow of William A. Bridgeman. Survivors include: daughters, Ruth Jones of Bristol, VA, Dorothy Booher of Bristol, VA, and Peggy Campbell of Blountville, TN; sons, James E. Bridgeman of Blountville, Robert L. Bridgeman of Bluff City, Gary Bridgeman of Bristol, TN, Donald Bridgeman of Bristol, TN, Jack Bridgeman of Ocean Park, NJ, Harold Bridgeman of Bristol, TN, and William Arthur Bridgeman Jr. of Bristol, TN;. sister, Evelyn Holmes of Bristol, VA; several sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BRYANT, MARGARET ELLEN Margaret Ellen Bryant of Bristol died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Asbury Center at Baysmont in Kingsport. She was born in Chilhowie, VA, a daughter of the late James Edward and Frances Belle Faris Bryant. She was a member of the Cradle Roll at Chilhowie Methodist Church. When she was 3 or 4 years old, the family moved to Marion. She attended the Marion schools, was a graduate of Marion College and received her masters degree from Radford University. Miss Bryant began her teaching career in a one-room school. She had lived in Bristol since 1941. She taught the first grade in elementary school for 43 years, 38 of which were at Fairmount School in Bristol, and retired in 1974. She was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Finance. She was president of the United Methodist Women and chaired various committees. Miss Bryant served as president of the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Association where she helped establish the Retired Teachers Scholarship for Tennessee students interested in teaching. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for teachers, American Association of University Women, the U.W.C.A., the Teachers Bridge Club and the Women's Literary Club. She enjoyed reading gardening and hiking. She was a great lover of nature and, most of all, loved children and her church. Miss Bryant is survived by a special friend, Virginia Brockman of Kingsport; and two nieces, Sue Bryant Parker and Barbara Richardson, both of Roanoke. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at State Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Dearing and Rev. Jane Nelson officiating. The committal service and burial in Round Hill Cemetery in Marion will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, State Street United Methodist Church or a favorite charity. BUNN, NANCY RUTH KILGORE Nancy Ruth Kilgore Bunn died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Roanoke, VA. She was born May 5, 1911, in Wise, VA, and was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Martha Alice Sheppe Kilgore. The family moved to Bristol in 1920. Mrs. Bunn graduated with the Virginia High School Class of 1929 and later from Bristol Commercial College. She retired in 1983 as secretary and real estate broker from the Charles J. Lowry Agency and was for many years the secretary of the Bristol Board of Realtors. She received honors from the Virginia State Board of Realtors. Mrs. Bunn was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bristol, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the Evelyn Lane Frost Group of the WMU. She had an abiding interest in the Haven of Rest Rescue Mission and was a member of its Women's Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Bristol Historical Society and the Classic Review Study Club. While living in the Roanoke Valley in recent years, Mrs. Bunn attended Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and participated in the Joy Sheffy Circle. She also attended meetings of the Roanoke Alliance for the Visually Enabled (RAVE). Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Kay B. and Richard Smith of Roanoke, VA; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law: Matthew R. and Wendy E. Smith of Richmond, VA; three great-grandchildren: Jarred Luke Smith, Sarah Lawren Smith and Thomas Richard Smith; two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Charles T. and Sara R. CASEY, TERRY ALAN BLOUNTVILLE, TN -- Terry Alan Casey, 39, went to be with the Lord early Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, as the result of injuries that he sustained in an automobile accident on Highway 11-W. Terry was born in Covington, KY, he was the son of Alan and Laverne Cullum Casey of Kingsport. Terry was a CRT and was employed by the Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol. Terry accepted the Lord as his Savior at Maple Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Rogersville. Terry was a proud father-to-be of his second child in May 2001. He was a self-employed farmer, teacher in the Russell County School System for 10 years, principal of Valley Institute School nine years and was director of instructions for Washington County Virginia School System until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for 45 years, was a Sunday school department head, usher and deacon. CUNNINGHAM, HAROLD BUFORD "DOC" Harold Buford "Doc" Cunningham, 57, of Blountville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, of an apparent heart attack. He was born in Washington County, VA, and raised in Sullivan County, TN. Mr. Cunningham was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed by the Sullivan County Department of Education in the maintenance department for almost 25 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. DENTON, CLYDE "SHORTY" Willie Clyde (Shorty) Denton, 86, of Blountville, TN, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Shorty was born in Scott County, VA, on Feb. 2, 1914, the son of William Benjamin and Virgie Booher Denton. Shorty moved to Sullivan County at the age of 16. Shorty retired from Tennessee Eastman Company where he was foreman in building No. 120 of the CE Division after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Whiteside Lodge of Blountville. He was a member of Miller's Chapel Baptist Church. Other than his parents, Shorty was preceded in death by a grandson: Benjamin Berry Helvey; two brothers: John Hugh Denton Sr. and Herbert Denton Sr.; and a brother-in-law: Carmel Stevens. Shorty was a kind, sincere and devoted man whose laugh brought joy to others. EADS, PAUL RICHARD Paul Richard Eads, 64, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. Born to the late Joseph Austin and Stella Nannie Clark Eads, he had moved back to Bristol 12 years ago from Richlands, VA, where he had lived since 1967. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the choir, on the finance committee and was active in the Food Bank of the church. Paul retired from Nabisco Inc. with over 30 years of service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many and will be missed by all. His parents; two brothers, Austin and Thurman Eads; and one sister, Naomi Stewart preceded him in death. GRUBB, JOHN H. KINGSPORT -- John H. Grubb, 67, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. John was born in Bristol, VA, March 27, 1933, a son of the late Andrew and Maggie Watson Grubb. John lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the United States Air Force. He was a retired foreman of Tennessee Eastman Company. Other than his parents, eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. John was one of 13 children. John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Audrey Browder Grubb of Kingsport; his daughter, Debbie K. Gilliam of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Bryan Gilliam and April Gilliam of Kingsport; two sisters, Pauline Walls and Ida Luttrell; and two brothers, Andrew and Jessie Grubb. HENLEY, JOAN B. Joan B. Hensley, 69, of Tucson, AZ, passed away Dec. 6, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Gene O. Hensley and daughter Paula Hensley, of Tucson, AZ; sister, Betty Henry of Utica, NY,; and brother Edgar Foedish Jr. of Surprise, AZ. A longtime resident of Kingsport, Joan spent most of her life in radio and theater. She was managing director of the Olde West Dinner Theater, cultural arts director for the City of Kingsport responsible for starting programs such as Allandale Christmas Village, cultural programs for the deaf and Christmas Connection, an annual arts and crafts show and sale. She was well known as the owner/director of the successful Showboat Dinner Theater. She also established the Rollabout Theater, a senior citizen theater, several children's theater groups and wrote children's books. Joan was a member of Kiwanis and Altrusa. She received numerous awards for outstanding service from various community and professional organizations and served on the Grovernor's Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. KEGLEY, JAMES CECIL HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- James Cecil Kegley, 60, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, as a result of an accident. He was born June 16, 1940, in Wytheville, VA, to Ruth Shupe Kegley and the late Howard Slemp Kegley. He was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School Class of 1958 and Virginia State Police Academy. Before retiring from the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Charlotte, he was a Virginia state trooper and a U.S. Marine. He was a devoted member of Lake Norman Baptist Church who was always willing to help others, loved the Lord and has now gone to be with Him. In addition to being a loving husband, father and brother, he had a very special loving relationship with his 8-year-old granddaughter, Christin. McCLAIN, CARL W. "RED" KINGSPORT, TN -- Carl W. "Red" McClain, 81, of 921 Glade Mill Road, Kingsport, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. McClain retired from Mead Corporation after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church. He was also a Shriner. His parents, Ethel and Mitchell McClain, and a brother, Paul McClain preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Ethel Trent McClain, of Kingsport; stepson, Parker J. Trent and wife, Barbara, of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Tina Trent King and husband, Michael, and Brian E. Trent, all of Kingsport; two great-grandchildren, Dallas King and Amy King, both of Kingsport; a sister, Ruby Haworth of Auburn, NY; a brother, Guy McClain of Cocoa, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. McCLELLAN, MARY Mary McClellan passed away Dec. 4, 2000, in her home. Mrs. McClellan was born and raised in Dundee Scotland and served the British Royal Air Force as a plane spotter during World War II. She married her husband and moved to the United States at the close of the war. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Octor. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Linda McClellan and Steve and Lola McClellan; four grandchildren, Jimmy, Alan, Maggie and Kaine; and two great-grandchildren, Braxton and Megan. McCONNELL, ELSIE KELLER ABINGDON, VA -- Mrs. Elsie Keller McConnell, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and the daughter of the late Herbert and Eva Smith Keller. She taught in the Washington County School System for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Preston McConnell. Survivors include: one daughter: Carolyn Addison of Bristol, VA; one son: James William McConnell of Meadowview; two sisters: Sara Dutton of Glade Spring and Nell Grant of Abingdon; four grandchildren: Athena Rhea, Sandra Snaden, Eva Reavis and Jackie Meadows; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a retired service manager with Goodpasture Motor Co. in Bristol and a member of the Beech Grove United Methodist Church. Mr. Miller, 77, of 47 Green Tree Circle, Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Arthur C. and Marie Miller. He was a native of Cincinnati, OH. He was a retired employee of Raytheon where he served as a quality control engineer and purchasing agent and was also a former employee of Marshall Manufacturing in Lewisburg, TN. Mr. Miller was also a stained glass artist and designed and made stained glass windows for several churches. He w
