BALL, JACKIE K. COLUMBIA, SC -- Jackie K. Ball, 60, formerly of Bristol, TN, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Ridgeway, SC. He was born in Bristol, TN, and was the son of the late Giles and Lena Musick Ball. He attended Tennessee High School where he was a four-letter athlete in tennis, track, basketball and football. In 1950, he was instrumental in leading the Tennessee High School Vikings football team, as their quarterback, to their first Big five Championship since 1929. He was also named a member to Bristol's 1950 All-City Team, an honor recognizing players who were the best at their positions. He later proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He then relocated to Columbia, where he worked for the Richaland County DHEC for a number of years. He is survived by daughter: Kathy of Blythewood, SC; sons, Joel of Columbia and Kenny of Winnsboro, SC; grandchildren: Travis, Russell, Nick, Timothy and Nicole; one great-grandson; brothers: Freddie of Bristol, TN, Harry Neal of El Paso, TX, and Bob of Stanford, FL. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN. Military honors will be provided by VFW Patton Crosswhite. There will be no visitation. BARRY, ALVIN Y. SHADY VALLEY, TN -- Alvin Y. Barry, 78, of 2579 Highway 133, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. He was a native of Shady Valley and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked for the TVA for several years before becoming a minister. He ministered in several Church of Christ churches in the area. He was a member of the Crandull Church of Christ in Shady Valley. He is survived by his wife, Sue Barry; one daughter, Linda Miller of West Jefferson, NC; one son, Tony Barry of Shady Valley; one sister, Georgia Bentley of Shady Valley; one brother, R.C. Barry of Bristol, TN.; four grandchildren, Anthony, Greg, Matt and Kerry; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Milton Mathers, Mr. Will Johnson and Mr. Mark Miller, ministers, officiating. Burial will follow in Blevins Cemetery, Shady Valley. Pallbearers will be Olan Bentley, Harry Bentley, Bill Manuel, Dennis Honaker, Ed Seals, Roger Blevins and Steve Hicks. BAUMGARDNER, MILDRED LUCILLE SHUMATE Mildred Lucille Shumate Baumgardner, of Bristol, VA, died Jan. 7, 2001, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Avery and Maggie Mae Shumate and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was a homemaker and a member of Bradley Street Baptist Church where she formerly served as secretary, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Ladies Circle. She was the widow of Charles Elmer Baumgardner. Survivors include: sons, Donald Paul Baumgardner of Bristol, VA, Ronald Charles Baumgardner of Bristol, VA, and Randell Jack Baumgardner of Portland, OR; sister, Katrina Hart of Konnarock, VA; brothers, Lawrence Shumate of Damascus, VA, and French Shumate of Boothwin, PA; grandchildren, Michael Baumgardner of Meadowview, VA, and Angie Thomas of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren, Travis Baumgardner, Lauren Baumgardner and Chance Thomas; several nieces and nephews; and two special nieces, Margie Sargent and Debbie Almaroad. BELCHER, RUTH JANE SULLIVAN CHILHOWIE -- Ruth Jane Sullivan Belcher died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. She was the widow of Bill Calvin Belcher. She is survived by three sisters, Magdeline Davenport and Ethel Jackson, both of Chilhowie, and Nancy Regan, Lynchburg, VA; one special nephew, Billy Warf; one special niece, Amanda Mountain; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, D.W. and Vadie Walls Sullivan; and five brothers, Fred, Franklin, Claude, Daily and Amos Sullivan. She was a devoted wife, loving sister and aunt, and a faithful member of the Chilhowie Pentecostal Holiness Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Charles DeBord and E.B. Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery. BELLAMY, LOUISE A. Louise A. Bellamy, 65, of 1513 Vance Drive, Bristol, TN, died Monday, Jan 8, 2001, at her home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Sullivan County, the daughter of the late William D. and Betty Ann Stykes Bowers. She was a retired employee of Raytheon Co., with 30 years of service. She was an active member of Volunteer Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Rasnick. Survivors include her husband, Bradley "Bo" Bellamy; one daughter, Deborah A. Bellamy, Piney Flats, TN; two sons, Michael B. Bellamy and his wife, Rebecca Bellamy, of Jacksonville, AL, and Stephen Bellamy of Murfreesboro, TN; two sisters, Shirley Dishner, Blountville, and Billie Jean Osborne, Bluff City, TN;. three brothers, J. BENTLEY, JAMES ELMO KINGSPORT, TN -- James Elmo Bentley, 85, died at 12:04 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at his home in Lynn Garden. Born in Big Stone Gap, VA, on May 21, 1915, he has been a resident of Kingsport since 1935. Mr. Bentley was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Franklin Printing Company with over 46 years of service. He had been a member of Lynn Garden Evangelical Presbyterian Church since 1952. Mr. Bentley was a 50-plus year member of Kingsport Masonic Lodge 688, Lynn Bachman Chapter, a member of American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Leora Bentley and Harry and Gertrude Wallace; and one brother, H. C. COOPER, ROY K. HENDERSONVILLE, NC -- Roy K. Cooper, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Margaret R. Pardee Hospital after a brief illness. He was a native of Norwalk, CT, and was a prior resident of Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee, before moving to Henderson County 15 years ago. He was a son of the late Anne Kramer Hagstrom and stepfather, A. O. Hagstrom. He was the husband of the late Phebe May Cooper who had passed away in 1994. He was a lifetime member and past exulted ruler of the Elks Lodge in Bristol, TN, past president of Civitan and had also volunteered for Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, NC. She lived in the Bristol area most of her life and was a retired employee from the Bristol Memorial Hospital housekeeping department. JACKSON, WILLIE LONZIE "LON" Mr. Willie Lonzie "Lon" Jackson, 92, of 183 Olden St., Bristol, VA, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his residence. Born in Meadowview, VA, to the late Charles Oscar and Lou Ella Jackson, he moved to Bristol some 55 years ago. His brothers, Garnett (Collie), Alfred, Reece, Charlie and Edward Jackson along with sisters Edith Powers, Lillian Litton, Ollie Moore and Ethel Spears preceded him in death. He was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church and retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. His wife of 56 years, Vivian E. Musser Jackson, survives him along with a son, Glenn and his wife Donna Jackson of Kingsport, TN. His two sisters, Mildred Francisco of Norfolk, VA, and Maureen Elva Haga of Bristol, TN, and several nieces and nephews also survive. JOHNSON, ANNA MAE Anna Mae Johnson of 605 Rose St., Bristol, TN, died Jan. 7, 2001, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. She was the daughter of the late George and Mattie Hudson and had moved to Bristol from Johnson City 35 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Cash Hollow Baptist Church. She was the widow of Lewis Johnson. JOHNSON, THEODER "BOOB" Theoder (Boob) Johnson of Bristol, TN, died Jan. 18, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. Mr. Johnson was a devoted husband of the late Carrie Bell Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a native of Abingdon. At an early age, his family moved to Bristol, VA, where he attended Ninth Street Presbyterian School and graduated from Douglass High School. He served in the United States Navy and fought in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from military service, Mr. Johnson returned to Bristol and was employed at Bristol Tennessee Electric Systems after 26 years. He was a dedicated and active member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees for over 26 years as treasurer and was a member of the United Methodist Men. Mr. Johnson is survived by four nephews and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at John Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Daniels, Pastor Jacqueline Oxendine, Rev. James H. McDaniel Sr., Rev. Dr. W. A. Johnson and Pastor Ann Johnson officiating. JONES, MARSHALL BLUFF CITY, TN -- Marshall Jones, 87, of 444 Cedar St. died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Jonesville, VA, he was the son of the late Everett Bruce and Odessa Gertrude Smith Jones. He was a member of Bluff City United Methodist Church. KEIRSTEAD, ROBERT W. Robert W. Keirstead, 69, of Bristol, TN, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Keirstead was a native of Waltham, Mass., and a graduate of Waltham High School. He served four years in the Air Force and attended Northeast University and the University of New York at Sony. He worked for 20 years in management at International Harvestor. He also worked for Campbell Corporation, Goodpasture Motors and Century 21 Realty in Bristol. He was former owner of the Bristol Flowerama. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bristol YMCA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Ola Keirstead and brother, Clifford Keirstead.
