ABBOTT, JUDITH ALLEN EVERETT, PA -- Judith Allen Abbott, 88, of North Spring St., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital, Altoona, PA. She was born June 25, 1912, in Bristol, TN, a daughter of the late James Rolf and Nellie (Kinzel) Allen. In 1941, she married Carleton L. Abbott. He preceded her in death in December 1974. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Allen and George Allen; an infant sister and sisters, Edith Fletcher, Ina Ambler, Miriam Allen and her twin sister, June Allen Derrick. Mrs. Abbott was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Bedford, PA, and previously attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Bristol, VA. She was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and King College. She taught for 26 years in Bristol Tennessee schools. She served on the Board of the Bristol Tennessee Education Association for 15 years; was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honor society for women teachers, the Retired Teachers' Association and the Tennessee Ornithological Society. She is survived by a daughter, Rebekah and husband, Marion "Chip" Clower, Fairfax, VA; grandson, Christopher Cower, Salt Lake City, Utah; granddaughter, Carolina Clower, Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Glenwood Cemetery with Reverend Hamilton Fuller officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of the service at the cemetery. BARKER, LEXIE PETERS Mrs. Lexie Peters Barker, 94, of Bristol, VA, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in West Virginia and had lived most of her life in Washington County, VA. She attended Radford College and was a retired teacher having taught in Washington County, VA, for many years. She was a member of the Abingdon Bible Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Jay S. Barker. She is survived by: one son, J.R. Barker, Bluff City, TN; one brother, J.L. Peters, Washington; two sisters, Thelma Freeman, Michigan, and Eva Sorah, Washington County, Va.; three grandchildren, James R. Barker, Debbi Messer and Julie B. Tinsley; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Messer and Alexie Messer. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Paul J. BARR, JOHN BEN John Ben Barr, 77, 1380 Bristol Caverns Highway, Bristol, TN., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was a native of Sullivan County, and a son of the late William Henry and Cora Bell Barr. He was a farmer and former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing, Imperial Reading and Bristol Jeans and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Emily Patrick Barr. Survivors include daughter, Barbara Ellen Rouse, Bristol, TN; sons, Bobby Blaine Barr, Billy Eugene Barr, Carl Junior Barr, Fred Wayne Barr, John Thomas Barr, David Allen Barr and Ronnie Joe Barr, all of Bristol, TN; sister, Wyona Bell Pickle, Bluff City, TN; and brother, William Warren Barr, Bristol, TN. BAUMGARDNER, JUANITA CLAY “NITA” Juanita Clay "Nita" Baumgardner, formerly of Bristol, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Asbury Center in Kingsport. She was born in Bristol, TN, and was a daughter of the late John B. and Jeannie English Baumgardner. She was a member and a former deacon of First Presbyterian Church. While in Kingsport, she was an associate member of Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School, Virginia Intermont College and King College. She completed graduate studies at the University of Virginia and New York University. She was a former teacher in both the Bristol Tennessee and Bristol Virginia school systems. Her summers were spent working in children's camps, such as Camp Cherokee at Big Creek, TN, Camp Pocahontas in Chilhowie, VA, and Camp Chewasee in Gatlinburg. She spent 42 summers with Life Camps, formerly sponsored by Life Magazine for disadvantaged New York City children. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the D.A.R. and the 1931 Women's Club. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Helen Cosby of Richmond, VA, Lewis F. Cosby of Johnson City, TN, Robel Baumgardner of Bristol, VA, Nell Payne Chesheire of Jefferstown, KY, and Jean Baumgardner Carlson of Torrance, CA; and several great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. BELCHER, JAMES LEE GLADE SPRING, VA -- Mr. James Lee Belcher, 37, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late Clyde Marvin Belcher Sr. and Annie Jane Plummer. Mr. Belcher was an active member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Lifesaving Crew, serving as second lieutenant, and also the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as sergeant. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Belcher; a son, Timothy "Shane" Belcher and a daughter, Leigh Ann Belcher, both of the home; two brothers, Ellis Belcher and Clyde Belcher, both of Abingdon; a sister, Brenda Griffin of Tallahassee, Florida; his stepfather, Robert "Bob" Davenport of Glade Spring; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. BLEVINS, EVELYN M. GREEN COVE, VA -- Evelyn M. Blevins, 74, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the home of her sister in Spotsylvania, VA, after a long, courageous struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Fuget, KY, and had lived in College Park, MD, for several years before moving to Green Cove in 1980. She was a member of Kent Baptist Church in Landover, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents, Trigg and Ruby McKenzie; two sisters, Pauline Blair and Alline Rutledge; two brothers, James Allen McKenzie and Maxwell McKenzie; and one great-nephew, Ryan Rodgers. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jesse D. Blevins; one son, Jeffrey D. Blevins and his wife, Rosanna, of Sacramento, CA; one daughter, Karen Klapac and her husband, Martin, of College Park, MD; one sister, Rena Wyatt and her husband, Reece, of Spotsylvania; one brother, Raymond McKenzie and his wife, Nancy, of Flat Gap, KY; six grandchildren, Jessica Blevins, Matthew Blevins, Kyle Klapac, Rosemary Klapac, Joseph Klapac and Timothy Klapac; and many nieces and nephews who loved and adored her very much. He was born in Bristol, TN, and had made his home in Laurel Bloomery for the past seven years. Dennis was a self-employed carpenter and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Helen J. BOLLING, EARL JACKSON Earl Jackson Bolling, 65, of 165 Windy Hill Road, Bristol, TN died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his residence, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Woodby Bolling. Mr. Boling had resided in the Bristol area for the last 14 years moving from Johnson County, TN. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the West Hills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, David Andrew Boling. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mrs. Linda Snyder Boling of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Blake (Dyan) Grindstaff of Mountain City, and Mrs. Rudy (Shelly) Haynes of Johnson City; twin grandsons, Travis and Dakota Grindstaff of Mountain City; five brothers; two sisters; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Boyd was a former employee of Raytheon Co. and an active member of the Riverbend Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Dale Boyd and Robert Gayle Boyd. Survivors include: husband of 57 years, Robert C. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during the Korean War, and retired from WCYB TV in 1985, as a photographer. He was the owner of Image III, making commercials for television for many businesses in the Tri-City area. He was the past owner of Eastern Film in Kingsport in the 1960s and was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Mull; and a brother, Franklin T. Brown. Survivors include: wife of 52 years, Dorothy Brown of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela "Pam" and Danny Mele of Miami, FL, Marty Catherine and James Bowman of Johnson City, TN, and Alice and Danny Fernandez of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Kim and Robert Mele of Miami, and Nicholas Fernandez of Atlanta; four god-children, David Hill of Mt. EMMERT, MARGARET ANN NICKELS ABINGDON -- Mrs. Margaret Ann Nickels Emmert, 61, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Ryburn and Frances Nickels. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of the Gospel Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Moore. Mama was a born-again Christian who loved God and her family dearly. She was very proud of her loving husband, who watched over her as a guardian angel; her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; and enjoyed spending time with each of them. She loved growing flowers, especially roses and going fishing. Even though she had been blind for the past 18 years, she worked in her flower gardens as much as possible and enjoyed shopping and attending church. She was a very independent woman and would not let her blindness get her down. Before becoming blind, Mama was a Sunday school teacher at the Gospel Tabernacle and made a great impact on every child she taught. She had always hoped to teach again someday. maybe she's doing just that. We're going to miss you, Mama! We love you. EVANS, LOIS CANTRELL GURNEE, Ill. -- Lois C. Evans (nee Cantrell), 52, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Naval Hospital, Naval Training Center Great Lakes. She was born Jan. 12, 1949, in Bristol, VA, to the late Jerry and Mary (nee Tolliver) Cantrell. She moved to the Great Lakes-Gurnee area in 1999 following the retirement of her husband from the United States Navy in Corpus Christi, TX. Mrs. Evans, a Vietnam-era veteran herself, served in the United States Navy, enlisting July 24, 1970, and served for 20 years. She retired June 20, 1990, at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a first class petty officer. Following her retirement, she served as ombudsman to commanding officer, USS Scott (Norfolk, VA) and to commander, mine warfare command (Corpus Christi, TX). For her dedicated service to the nation, the United States Navy, her husband and the people of Texas, she was commissioned on Oct. 1, 1998, as a "Yellow Rose of Texas" by then-Gov. George W. Bush. Mrs. Evans was employed as a facilitator and office assistant for the PREVENT program at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, and was pursing her master's degree in psychology from National-Louis University. GRAY, JOHN CLARK Mr. John Clark Gray, 79, of Bristol, TN, died Saturday at Bristol National Healthcare. Mr. Gray was born in Panama City, FL, a son of the late Joseph S. and Julia Philips Gray. He was a graduate of Bay County High School, attended the University of Florida, ETSU and graduated from Carolina School of Commerce. Mr. Gray served in the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II and retired from the Army Reserve as a chief warrant officer IV, after 32 years of service. He was an accountant for Gardner's Dairy, Rocky Mount, NC, for 12 years before moving to Bristol in 1960; and he was comptroller for Bassett's Dairy until his retirement. Upon retirement, he was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross and numerous church groups, worked in disaster areas and building homes and churches in foreign countries and the United States of America. Mr. Gray was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served on several committees, taught Sunday school, including the Silent Friends Class, and was past chairman of the Board of Deacons. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Mayo Gray of the home; and two sons, Michael C. Gray and wife, Diane, of Gallatin, TN, and Thomas C. Gray and wife, Janet-Leigh, of Bristol, TN. HANSEN, VENDITA MORRELL LAUREL, MD -- Vendita Morell Hansen, 85, beloved wife of Wilbur R. Hansen, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD Mrs. Hansen had lived in the Laurel area since 1936, and was a former resident of Bristol, VA. She was born in Bristol, VA, and lived in Virginia for 44 years. She helped her mother, Mrs. Bessie G. Morell run Morells Grocery Stores in the Bristol area and the Honeymoon Gift Shop on Route 1 in Howard County, MD. During the early years of the gift shop, it was also a tourist home (the only one between Baltimore and Washington). HANSHEW, PAUL S. Paul S. Hanshew, 89, of 745 Alabama St., Bristol, TN, went to be with the Lord, Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. A native of Atkins, VA, Mr. Hanshew had made his home in the Bristol area most of his life. He was a retired employee of Univac, a member of the Moose Lodge since 1949, and a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II and the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret O. HARRIS, KAREN ANN KINGSPORT, TN -- Karen Ann Harris, our beloved daughter of 38 years, passed away Feb. 14, 2001, after a long and enduring race against breast cancer. Karen is survived by her loving and faithful husband, Michael; two beautiful boys, Devin and Ethan; her parents, Robert P. and Mary B. Consoli of Townsend, Tenn., and St. Petersburg, FL.; her brothers, Richard, Robert and Michael; Michael's parents, David L. and Laurel J. Harris, also reside in Kingsport. Karen was born in Andover, Mass., on June 8, 1962. After attending St. Petersburg Catholic High School, she went on to earn her bachelor of science degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College, attended Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University and received her masters degree in political science from Auburn University in 1990. Prior to her marriage to Michael Harris on Aug. 22, 1992, Karen was the director of the Appalachian Project with Industry in Johnson City, TN, and after her diagnosis, she was named an honorary lifetime member of the Johnson City Junior League. Aside from her passion of helping others achieve their dreams, Karen had a passion for "running the race" and she completed the New York City Marathon in 1987 and 1990. Karen will always be remembered as a loving, caring and gifted wife, mother, sister and daughter. We are grateful for the many lives that she touched as a result of her incredible courage, determination, faith and positive attitude which she so lovingly shared with all who were fortunate to know her. May all who came to love Karen, rest in the knowledge that Karen fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith (1 Timothy 4:6-8). Mrs. Keller was preceded in death by her mother, Deltie Fields; her father, Jim Helbert; her stepfather, Tom Fields; and two husbands, Howard Hill and Clyde Keller. Survivors include: daughter, Wanda Hill Miller of Smyrna; stepdaughter, Judy Anderson of North Carolina; brother, Caney Helbert of Lebanon, Tenn.; half-sister, Leny Davis; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West Hills Cemetery, Lebanon, VA. KENDRICK, DOROTHY M. CROSS Dorothy M. Cross Kendrick, 73, 1529 Massengill Road, Bristol, TN, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, the daughter of the late Oscar and Janie Cross, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will always be remembered for the love and kindness that she showed everyone. Mrs. Kendrick was retired from Bristol Lingerie and was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, which she loved. KENDRICK, MARION A. Marion A. Kendrick, 75, 1529 Massingill Road, Bristol, TN, went to be with the Lord Feb. 25, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a son of the late Tom and Eliza Dishner Kendrick. He was a loving father and grandfather who will always be remembered for his hard work and the kindness he showed to others. Because of his love for horses and working with them, he had participated in the activities of the Walker Mountain Wagon Train Club and riding in parades. He was retired from Bristol Steel with 41 years of service. He was a charter member and deacon of the Full Gospel Fellowship Church where he was instrumental in the building of the church, both physically and spiritually, and was a member of the Board of Directors. KENNEDY, CECIL HOWARD ST. PAUL, VA -- Funeral services for Cecil Howard Kennedy will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
