ALMAROAD, FRANK W. Frank W. Almaroad, 60, of 930 Meadowview Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at home. He was born Aug. 31, 1934, the son of the late Charles Lee and Maude D. Mobley Almaroad. Mr. Almaroad was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include one sister, Margaret Stout; three brothers, Kenneth Almaroad, James W. Almaroad and Joe Almaroad; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the graveside in Susong Cemetery with Chaplain Paul Thomas of DAV Chapter 40 officiating. ANDERSON, CHARLES BLANTON Charles Blanton Anderson, 37, of Weaver Pike, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday Dec. 20, 2001. He was the son of Walter and Norma Hawks Anderson of Abingdon. He was a graduate of Abingdon High School and an employee of Siemens Corporation. He attended Riverbend Baptist Church and was of the Methodist faith. Surviving, besides his parents, are: wife, Tammy Morrell Anderson; sister, Lisa Anderson Osborne and husband Tom of Abingdon; nieces and nephews, David Osborne, Justin Matthew, Cody and Courtney Thomas; brother-in-law, Mike Morrell; sister-in-law, Teresa Thomas and husband Dennis; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gene and Martha Morrell of Bristol, Tenn.; special aunt, Aunt Jackie; several aunts and uncles; two close friends, Bobby Carr and Fred Ventable; many other friends at Siemens Corporation; special aunt, Jackie; and cat, Putsy. BAINES, AMANDA BROOKE "GOOG" Amanda Brooke "Goob" Baines, 19, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Johnson City Medical Center as the result of an automobile accident. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a 2001 graduate of East High School and a Northeast State freshman. She was an employee of the Blue Circle Restaurant and a member of the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Geraldine Tabor, and paternal grandfather, Charles F. Baines Sr. Survivors include parents, Frank and Kim Tabor Baines; brother, Mike Baines; maternal grandparents, Marvin and Elizabeth Tabor; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Baines; four aunts; several cousins; and special friends, Jenna Phillips and Stephanie Leonard. BAKER, LEONARD NATHANIEL "NAT" BLOUNTVILLE Mr. Leonard Nathaniel Nat Baker Sr., 90, died Saturday night ,Dec. 22, 2001, at National Healthcare Center of Bristol. Mr. Baker was a member of the Blountville United Methodist Church. He was a retired automotive salesman for Goode Motors of Bristol and Daugherty Brothers of Gate City, Va. He was a native of Norton and had made his home in the Bristol area for many years. He is survived by his wife, Violet Marie Baker of Bristol; three sons, John William Baker of Blountville, Ronald Lee Baker of Blountville and Leonard Nathaniel Baker Jr. of Bristol, Va..; one sister, Dorothy Fleenor of Kingsport; two brothers, Eugene Baker and Billy Joe Baker of Bristol, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. BALL, VICKY LYNN AGRA, Okla. -- Vicky Lynn Ball died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at her home south of Agra. Born in Bristol, Va., the daughter of William Fleenor of Bristol, Va., and the late Pearl (Davis) Fleenor, she received her early education in Bristol, Va. She was employed at the National Garment Factory in Chandler and also worked at the Safe a Stop in Oklahoma City. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Agra and active in the Awana Club at the church. She was president of the Women's Home Extension Club in Agra. Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband, Michael Ray Ball; sons, David Fleenor of Oklahoma City and Michael T. Ball of Yukon; daughters, Tammy Lynn Balliet of Germany, Michelle Hawkins of Clarkville, Tenn., and Kathy Higby of Midwest City, Okla.; brothers, Benny and Michael Fleenor of Bristol, Va.; sister, Doris Shelton of Bristol, Va.; and five grandchildren. BARNETT, PATRICIA ANN BLUFF CITY -- Patricia Ann Barnett, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Narrows, Va., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel Wilkerson Thorne and had lived in the Bristol area for the past 46 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother and grandmother until she was needed in heaven to complete the family harmonies. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Mobley; three sisters, Bernice Fleeman, Betty Farmer and Janice Ratcliff; and three brothers, Arnold Lee Thorne, Melvin Thorne and Lawrence Thorne. Survivors include: son, James Mobley, Bristol, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Phil Abbott, Bristol, Tenn.; three brothers, Aubrey Thorne, Rocky Thorne and Melvin Thorne, all of Narrows; grandson, Joseph McNeal, Bristol, Tenn.; four granddaughters, April Sells, Amanda Jarrett, Brittany Mobley and Emily Lowe; great-granddaughter, Brianna Scherb; numerous nieces and nephews; very special brother-in-law, Emmitt Fleeman; and a very special friend, Margaret Taylor. BARRETT, VERNON FRANK Vernon Frank Barrett, 90, of 1288 Big Hollow Road died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1911, the son of the late Matthew and Jenny Hawkins Barrett. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and retired from General Shale. He was a member of Bethel View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Olivean Baumgardner Barrett; and a son, William "Wilkey" Barrett. Survivors include: sons, Bob Barrett of Kingsport and Ray Barrett of Blountville; sisters, Hilah Henly and Ruby Greenway; brothers, Bill Barrett and J. D. Barrett; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. BASHAM, CHALMER L. Chalmer L. Basham, 79, of 205 Edgefield Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in National Health Care Nursing Home of Johnson City after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He had been a resident there since August 1997. He was a native of Berkley, W.Va., and a son of the late Rev. J. Lacy and Zetta M. Basham. his wife, Nadine M. Cage Basham, whom he married on March 15, 1947, also preceded him in death. Mr. Basham was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School. He joined the U.S. Marines on March 8, 1943, served in the Pacific area and China and was discharged May 7, 1946. He was employed by Monroe Calculating Machine Co. of Bristol soon after it opened and remained for over 20 years until it closed. Just prior to leaving Monroe he bought and managed a retail store/gas station in the Holston Valley area of Sullivan County and was self-employed locally in the building/management of a number of other retail/rental businesses thereafter. Mr. Basham was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church but had been an active participant at the church of The Glad Tidings until his admittance to NHC. Survivors include two sons, Chalmer L. Basham Jr. of Bristol, Tenn., and John S. Basham of Surrey, England; one daughter, Rita B. Payne of Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Ann Thompson and Beulah McCray, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, John Basham of Bristol, Tenn.; two grandsons, Robert A. Payne of Bristol, Tenn., and John D. Basham of Surrey; one granddaughter, Margaret R. Basham of Surrey; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20th, in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen L. Playl officiating. BENNETT, BEULAH SUTHERLAND "Boots" Beulah "Boots" Sutherland Bennett, 87, of Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Cleveland, Va., a daughter of the late Paul and Carrie McCloud Sutherland. She was a homemaker and a member of State Street United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Bennett, in 1995. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George E. and Kay Bennett of Caneadea, NY; daughter, Louise Bennett of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Pauline Griffith of Madison Heights, Mich.; and several nephews and cousins. BEVERLY, HUBERT RAY "HERB" BLOUNTVILLE Hubert Ray (Herb) Beverly Jr., 44, of 234 Massengill Road passed away at his residence due to a fire, Dec. 22, 2001. Herb was born Dec. 17, 1956, in Bristol, Va. He was the son of Hubert Ray Sr. and Lavada Mae (Stine) Beverly of Blountville. Herb worked as an auto parts dissembler. Herb was kind-hearted and a loving son, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather. BLACKWELL, WILLIAM L. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mr. William L. Blackwell, 80, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, Fla. Born in Huntington, W.Va., Mr. Blackwell was a son of the late William L. Blackwell and Ina King Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell was retired as a master mechanic for LTV Steel Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. He had moved to Dayton Beach from Bristol, Va., in 1985. He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Port Orange, Fla., and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Madeline Nash Blackwell; a son, Ronald Blackwell of Marion; two daughters, Nancy Smith of Brunswick, Ohio, and Deanne Kelley of Lakewood, Ohio; three sisters, Pat McCandless and Lil Farnell, both of Dothan, Ala., and Dixie Fleming of Abingdon; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon with Rev. Ernest Fleming and Rev. Ron Wright officiating. CAMPBELL, FLOYD ESCO BLUFF CITY -- Floyd Esco Campbell, formerly of Arizona, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in the Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn., after a period of declining health. Floyd was born July 21, 1914, in Arkansas, a son of the late William and Daisy Seals Campbell. He was retired from the Michigan School System. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Marie Campbell. He is survived by two daughters, Freda Bernice Weber of Sedona, Ariz., and Joyce Camile Hart of Bluff City; two sons, Don Campbell of Portland, Ore., and Gary Campbell of Glendale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

CHAMBERS, ANNA MAE McLAIN BLUFF CITY -- Anna Mae McLain Chambers passed away at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at NHC Health Care in Johnson City. Born in Benhams, Va., on May 1, 1911, a daughter of the late John Calvin and Sarah Elizabeth Blair Chambers, she had resided in Bluff City since 1957. Mrs. Chambers retired from Jacob's Creek Job Corps in 1995, following 16 years of service. She was a member of Tri-Cities Church of God in Piney Flats. Mrs. Chambers will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Carl E. CUNNINGHAM, WILLIAM CURTIS Jr. William Curtis Cunningham Jr., 56, of 1117 Carolina Ave., Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Anchorage Cove, Triangle, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at home following three years of many illnesses. Born in Smithfield, NC, he had lived most of his life in Northern Virginia. He was the son of the late Essie Geraldine Weatherholtz and Guy Weatherholtz of Front Royal, Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the International Elevator Constructors Union Local 10 in Washington, DC, Metro Area. He served two tours in the Vietnam War, where he received two Purple Hearts during combat and received a Bronze Star for valor. He was of the Protestant faith. DALTON, PHYLLIS S. KNOXVILLE Phyllis S. Dalton, 63, found eternal peace Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a resident of Bristol Tennessee for 13 years and worked as a manager at Roadrunner Texaco on West State Street for most of those years. She had been livng in Knoxville for the past year and a half. She was employed by Weigel's at Kingston Pike NW and Lenoir City. She was born in Hagerstown, Md. HAGA, LOIS LULA Lois Lula Simpson Haga, 84, of 316 Carolina Ave., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with our Lord Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in the Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol, Tenn. Mrs. Haga was a native of Algoma, W.Va., but had lived in the Bristol area for the past 47 years. She was a retired employee of Washington and Lee Elementary School with 20 years of service. Lois was a devoted daughter to her mother, whom she took care of until her death in 1964. She was a member of the Shelby Street Church of God. She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Adkins, and one sister, Lilly Mae Adkins. Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Mercer of Bristol, Va., and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Brackens of Wytheville, Va.; and four brothers, Walter Adkins Jr., Frank Adkins and Charles Adkins, all of Princeton, W.Va., and William McKinley Adkins of Bristol, Tenn. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Green officiating. HARLESS, CLAUDE W. Claude W. Harless Sr., 74, 416 Lakeview St., Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a retired salesman for Virginia Wholesale (formerly Jones Wholesale), U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith. LUNSFORD, F. E. Jr. F.E. Lunsford Jr., also known as "Bubba'' or "Junior'' to his friends and family, was found dead in his home on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001. MANIS, JAMES CLIFFORD "J.C." BLOUNTVILLE James Clifford (J.C.) Manis Jr., 46, went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, of an apparent heart attack. J.C. was born Oct. 17, 1955, in Sullivan County, a son of the late James Clifford Manis Sr., who passed away July 13, 1978, and Nancy (Horne) Manis Black of Blountville. J.C. was a former employee of Norfolk Southern Railway for 21 years. He was employed by Southern Building Systems. J. C. was an active and dedicated member of Charity Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon. J.C. had faith in his Lord and his fellowman. He had love, was forgiving, a sincere and a kind person whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched. He was a dedicated husband, dad, grandfather (to a very special grandson he loved dearly), a brother and son. He was a member of B.S.A. , served as assistant scoutmaster and Popcorn Kernel. MAYS, MARGARET H. Margaret H. Mays, 79, a native and lifelong resident of Bristol, Va., died on Dec. 7, 2001, after a lengthy illness at her daughter's home in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Mays was the daughter of the late Robert and Mamie Brown Harley of Bristol, Va., and the former wife of the late Verlin R. Mays. She was a graduate of Virginia High School and worked early in her career as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk for Monroe Industries and Clark TV and Radio. Until her retirement in 1987, she was employed as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk for the City of Bristol, Tenn. She was an active member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church and enjoyed participating in church functions, traveling with family and friends and performing musical theater as a member of the Bristol Parks and Recreations Senior Choir. She moved to San Antonio in February 2000 for health reasons. Survivors include daughters, Teresa Jean (Terry) M. Burgess (Walter) of San Antonio and Elizabeth A. (Anne) M. Threlkeld of Orange, Va.; four adored grandchildren, Adam A. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. He had been a resident of Greystone Health Care Center for the last 15 months. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. MILLER, CECIL LEE HONAKER -- Mr. Cecil Lee Miller, 55, of Hess Drive passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in a Bristol, Tenn., hospital. Born June 1, 1946, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of Gaynelle Lockhart Miller of Swords Creek, Va., and the late James Carlos "Pete" Miller. He had resided in the Honaker area his entire life and attended the Honaker Church of God. He had served in the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Germany. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Dominion Coal Corporation with 28 years of service. MOORE, EDITH MARIE LOVELL NORTON -- Edith Marie Lovell Moore, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late William M. and Lillie Mae Lovell. She spent most of her life in the Wise County area. The last 15 years were spent in Lee County, near Jonesville, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Virgil Moore; two sisters, Thelma Huff and Edna M. Couch; three brothers, Curtis L. Lovell, William Clarence Lovell and Johnny E. Lovell. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Family and friends will be received at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hagy-Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. MOORE, MARYLAND COLLIER Funeral services for Maryland Collier Moore will be conducted on Sunday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howard Campbell officiating. She was born in Wise, Va., on Nov. 10, 1921, the daughter of the late Logee and Amanda Mazella Collier. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a member of Rooty Branch Church. She was the widow of John Sherman Moore. Survivors include: niece, Joyce Ann Felty of Bluffton, Ind.; and special friends, Tim and Paulette Moore of Bristol, Va., Greg and Melissa Roark of Bristol, Va., and Candace and Brooke. MUTTER, WILLIAM EDWARD William Edward Mutter, 56, of Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at home. He was born in Plasterco, Va., a son of the late Joseph William and Vivian Whited Mutter, and had lived most of his life in Bristol. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Jewel Mutter. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo Mutter, Rhonda Hutson and Shannon Cross; two sons, Greg Hartley and Sam Hutson; five sisters, Bertie Ratcliff, Marie Hall, Rosemary Smithson, Elizabeth Crawford and Patricia Raines; three brothers, Joseph William Mutter Jr., Frank Mutter and George Mutter; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon in the chapel of Blevins Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Baker officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery. NECESSARY, J. B. J.B. Necessary, 88, of Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. He was a retired farmer and a member of Mary's Chapel Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ada Pullon Necessary; and one son, James A. Necessary. Survivors include one daughter, Mary N. Brewer of Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren, Phil L. Brewer and wife, Anita, of Bristol, Va., and Penny B. Neal of Bluff City; and one great-grandson, Joshua B. OLSON, EDWIN EARL NEBO, NC -- Edwin Earl Olson, 71, of North Shore Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Olson was born on May 28, 1930, and was a son of the late Eula "Julie" and Edwin O. "Ole" Olson of Bristol, Tenn. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; three sons, Ted M. Olson, of the home, Mark S. Olson of LaGrange, Ga., and Edwin P. Olson of Columbus, Ga.; daughters-in-law, Sandra E. Olson of Columbus and Sue Olson of LaGrange; grandchildren, Amanda Sloane, Ashley Olson and Andrea Olson, all of Columbus, and Jennifer L. Olson and Matthew E. Olson of LaGrange; great-grandchildren, Lydia Orr, Kyle Sloane and Hunter Sloane; and brothers, William V. Olson, Charles Olson and John G. Olson, all three of Bristol, Tenn. Ed earned a full football scholarship to William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., from his football career at Tennessee High School. He also attended East Tennessee State College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He retired after 40 years service with American Thread Co. and Coates N. American. He was in the industrial sales department and had made many friends all over the country. He was a loyal employee and a much-loved family man. A devoted Christian, Ed attended McDowell Presbyterian Church. He was affectionately known as "Pops" at South Mountain Children's Home where he helped deliver sweets to the children. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Glenwood Chapel, Shelby Hills Cemetery, Bluff City Highway, Bristol, Tenn., with the Rev. Dennis Carswell of McDowell Presbyterian Church and Rev. E.W. Ely officiating. At other times the family will be at the residence on North Shore Drive.
