Elijah Wood Family Genealogy
My father and I are attempting to locate genealogical information about his great grandparents in Sullivan County, TN. He has the following information:
I. His great grandparents, ELIJAH WOOD (born 1770-1780 ?) and WINIFRED(?)KEEN WOOD, lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee, andpurchased land in 1818.
II. ELIJAH AND WINIFRED KEEN WOOD had seven children: A. JOSIAH, born 1805, B. Daughter, born 1800-1810(?), C. Son, born 1810-1815(?), D. Son, born 1810-1815(?), E. ELIJAH WOOD, JR., born 1820, F. WILLIAM HITER WOOD, born 1824, and G. Daughter, born 1825-1830(?).
III. Although research shows us that WINIFRED KEEN's father, JONAH (or sometimes "JONAS") lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee, at this time, there is no record of the marriage of WINIFRED and ELIJAH in that area.
IV. If, in fact, ELIJAH and WINIFRED were married in Tennessee, and the records were burned with in the Sullivan County courthouse during the Civil War, it is our hope that someone can provide the name of ELIJAH's father from a family Bible or record.
I am also including the rest of our family's history, up to the present, in case some "cousins" might recognize some names!!
I. WILLIAM HITER WOOD and NANCY CLARK WOOD bought land near Shelbina, Missouri, in 1855, where JAMES SHERRY WOOD, the eighth of ten children, was born in 1856. His brothers and sisters included: A. John, b. 1842, B. Elizabeth, b. 1844, C. Mary, b. 1846, D. Milton, b. 1848, E. Amanda, b. 1850, F. Richard, b. 1852, G. Wilbur, b. 1854, H. JAMES SHERRY, b. 1856, I. Rowena, b. 1858, and J. Locattie, b. 1861
II.JAMES SHERRY WOOD fathered HARLAN CHAMP WOOD (my father) in 1911, in Shelbina, Missouri.
Thanks so much for your offer to post our genealogical information. My father is in his 86th year, and has been researching our line for the past 24 years. This search means alot to him!

I am searching for my great-great-great grandfather's parents. He is Looney Blevins born 1820 in Sullivan County, TN according to his Civil War Record. The first records the family can find for him is when he came to Carter County, TN in 1843 and joined the Stoney Creek Baptist Church. Looney joined the church the same day as John H Blevins who was listed in 1850 census in Sullivan Co, I believe it was district 30. In 1860 John H Blevins, Looney Blevins, Allen Blevins and William D Blevins all lived house to house in dist 10, Carter County, TN. In 1850 Allen Blevins was in Sullivan County living with Samuel Morrell. Looney married Martha Garland August 1843 in Carter County, TN. Their children were: 1. James C - 1844 2. Eliza Jane - 1846 3. Nancy Ann 4. Issac 5. Catherine (Kitty) 6. Lucresia 7. Allen 8. William 9. Laura 10. Lausie 11. Mary. I am very interested in the families of Sullivan Co who lived in the area around the South Holston Lake. Looney and Martha's home was located in upper Stoney Creek, TN in Carter Co. As a child I have walked to the top of the mountain where all my family lives and you get a beautiful view of Sullivan Co and the lake. I believe the family used these mountain trails often to travel from Sullivan to Carter Co. Any help that anyone can provide with the BLEVINS of Sullivan CO would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I am searching for information on a John Hicks who was said to have been born in Virginia and was of English descent. He came to Sullivan County, about 1795. I don't know who his wife was, but I do know he had a son James George Hicks who was born March 1790 (accroding to census records in N.C.). James George Hicks married Mary Magdalene Kettenring/Ketron. They had 5 sons: James George Jr.; Henry Catron; David Adam; Wesley Fletcher; and Nelson. They lived in the Arcadia section of the Bloomindale area of Sullivan Co. David Adam and Nelson left Sullivan County and did not return. David Adam left sometime after 1860 and settled in Missouri. Nelson left between 1850 and 1860 and no one heard from him again. He had a wife, Sarah and daughter Margaret and a son William when he left. Also in his household was an Ellen Maggart (1850 census). It is believed that Nelson went to California. I have been able to locate David Adam's family but no luck with Nelson. I would very much like to know if anyone had any information about my John Hicks. I have found a lot of John Hicks but none of them seem to fit the bill. He would have to have been old enough to have had a son in 1790. There are a lot of Hicks in Sullivan County, but other than the descendants of James George Sr., I can't link up to John. He seems to have appeared out of nowhere and dropped off the face of the earth. Help!

I am researching JOHN S. DENNY and his wife MARGARET SWATS. John was born about 1793 and married Margaret in Frederick County, VA. in 1818. John Fought in the War of 1812. John filed for a war pension and it was granted. John and his family relocated to Sullivan County, TN where he died in 1861 at Thomas Bridge, which is outside of Blountville, TN. Margaret died in 1884 and is buried in the old Blountville Cemetery. LUTHER DENNY, one of their sons, was a Captain in the Confederate Army of Tennessee and later worked as an assistant court clerk at the Blountville courthouse. John, Luther and at least three other sons of John were all millers. I believe one of his sons helped establish Bluff City Mills in Bluff City, TN. Cheryl A. Copas Mon Jan 6 14:30:43 1997
Primary interest Copas family of Sullivan & Washington Co TN, residing in the Kendrick's Creek / Eastern Star / Gray areas of current day Sullivan & Washington Counties. Am interested in any Copas lines or data & am willing to share what I have. Am currently trying to identify possible daughter(s) born 1802-1810 of Thomas born ca.1786 VA & Hannah (Jobe) Copas who resided from ca.1800-1840 in what later became 15th Civil District, Sullivan Co TN. Possibilities include: Polly Hickman born ca.1805 wife of John Hickman, listed in the 15th Civil District Sullivan Co TN in 1870 with what appears to be a grandson Ira Jobe 14 in household. Ira G. Jobe 5 listed in 1860 Sullivan Co Census living with Zachariah Jobe 61. Ira G. Jobe's death certificate states father Zack Jobe, mother not known. Suspect Ira G. Jobe's mother was a daughter of John & Polly Hickman, suspect Polly Hickman may have been a daughter of Thomas & Hannah (Jobe) Copas because Ira G. was a Copas name. Also John Hickman with wife 20-30 listed one page before Thomas Copas in the 1830 Sullivan Co Census. Zachariah Jobe 72 listed with what appears to be a daughter Mary / Polly Simpson in the 1870 Sullivan Co Census. Thomas & Hannah (Jobe) Copas moved to Monroe Co KY just before 1840. Sarah Simpson age 40 born ca.1810 TN with a son Zachariah living next to Thomas & Hannah (Jobe) Copas in the 1850 Monroe Co census. Seems possible that Sarah Simpson could be a daughter of Thomas & Hannah Copas. Ira G. Hall age 24 listed in the 1850 Monroe Co Census, no clue to parents, but Ira G. is a Copas family name. Looking at the 1830 Sullivan Co TN Census, a Thomas Hall was listed with wife 20-30 living relatively close to Thomas Copas. Wonder if a daughter of Thomas Copas could have married Thomas Hall and the family moved to Monroe Co KY. Any assistance with any of above or anything else pertaining to Copas lines appreciated! I would like to share information with anyone researching the surnames of GILLESPIE, STUART (STEWART), MYERS (MIERS), and MOORE. My G-G- Grandparents John W. GILLESPIE, born c. 1824 and Martha Jane STUART, born May 1826, married in Washington Co., Tenn., March 17, 1846. James MOORE was the bondsman. In 1850 they were living in Sullivan Co., with Frederick MIERS, born c. 1781 and Barbary MIERS, born c. 1779. There appears to be some connection with an Anderson MYERS of Sullivan or Washington County and Henry Myers. Also may be connected to the GARDINERS or DULANEYS of Sullivan County.
