William C. “Bill” Hicks
10/12/2009
This submittal is a follow-up to a previous article: WHO WERE JAKE HICKS AND JACOB H. HICKS? 12 Jan 2009 TNGenWeb-Sullivan County, TN.
The attached records are meant to help clear up the identities of some of the named Jacob Hicks’ appearing in Sullivan and Carter County records and also State records.
My great grandfather Jacob “Jake” Hicks (5 Apr 1842-18 Jan 1867) and Jacob H. Hicks were first cousins; the parents of Jacob H. being Edward Hicks (1797-1875) and Orra Amy (Boren) Hart.
Jacob H. Hicks was married twice (of record): (1) m. 15 Dec 1874 to Emma J. Carriger in Carter County, b. 14 Jun 1843, d. 25 Dec 1906 with issue; sons Edward C. b.Jan 1876, Charles b.1879, Bert and Wiley K. The 1880 census has him living in Sullivan County with Emma as his wife. Emma did not die until 1906 so this marriage apparently ended in divorce for he also married in his native Sullivan County-- (2) 13 Sep 1885 Mattie Harkleroad, b. 1845. In his pension application dated 15 Feb 1907 he states his wife is dead and refers to the children as “her children” which could be interpreted that Mattie Harkleroad had children from a previous marriage.
His brothers Andrew Jackson “A.J.” and Royston (Riston or Rice) also appear on the Roster of Co. B 8th Tennessee Cavalry (Col. Baxter Smith’s Regiment) as well as my great grandfather Jacob and his two brothers William Cate “W.C.” and Henry Jack “H.J.”. This helps explain why the same names continually appear as witnesses on the numerous pension applications of Confederate veterans who lived in the Dry Branch (Bluff City) area of Sullivan County.
Jacob H. spent his early military service in Texas serving with Company D 7th Texas Infantry before transferring to Company B 4th (8th Smith’s) Tennessee Cavalry of which Jacob was a member. Both men served until the close of the war, surrendering while under the Command of General Joseph E. Johnston.
The Carter County Courthouse document, a part of this report, shows the marriage to Emma J. Carriger. This recording shows “no return” in the marriage column, however the inscription on Emma’s headstone reads: “Wife of J. H. Hicks”.
Her burial is in the Kitzmiller Cemetery in the Kitzmiller family fenced-in section. This cemetery is located in the Hunter Community of Elizabethton, TN.
I have not been able to locate the burial site of Jacob H. Hicks. Mysteries remain but I am certain by all available documentation I have at the time of the submittal of this paper that my great grandfather Jacob and Jacob H. were first cousins.

Marriage to Emma J. Carriger
Carter County, TN Courthouse Record Book

W.C. Hicks, a (great granduncle) and a first cousin of Jacob H. Hicks with Abe McClellan made oath on February 15, 1907 as to their knowledge of the applicants military service. The transcription follows: …..That he was a member of same company with applicant and knows he served the army as stated by him, that he was still in the service at the time affiant was wounded on March 22, 1865 when affiant was taken to a private house, this was the last he saw of Mr. Hicks until after they all came home. W.C. Hicks stated that he was a member of same company with applicant and knows he rendered the service as stated by him, that he was present when General Johnston surrendered and knows that J.H. Hicks was there in the service at the time of his surrender, near Greensboro, N.C. but that he and affiant left as soon as the surrender occurred without receiving a discharge. Affiant knows about applicants property and will here state that he has just about the property set out by him, that he is totally disabled from work, is in bad financial condition, that he was a good soldier and is a good citizen and he is very much badly in need of help.
