Brief County History
Tipton County was established October 29, 1823 and organized December 1, 1823. It was named after Captain Jacob Tipton, who was killed while leading a charge of his troops against a force of Indians near Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1791. Part of Shelby County was appropriated to form Tipton County. In 1835, a portion of Tipton County was used to form a new Tennessee county, named Lauderdale.
Located in West Tennessee, one of Tennessee’s Three Grand Divisions, Covington is the county seat. The town was named for Leonard Wales Covington, a native of Maryland, who was killed in the battle of Chrysler’s Field during the War of 1812. Our western border is the Mississippi River. Haywood and Fayette are our neighboring counties, and across the River is Crittenden County, Arkansas.
