Date and Nut Cake

2 tbsp. ground chocolate

1 package pitted dates

1 cup boiling water

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup nuts, or more to taste

1 tsp. baking soda

2 cups flour

1 pinch salt

2 eggs

pinch of ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon

Cream butter and sugars. Mix with beaten egg. Add boiling water to dates, chocolate and spices. Add alternately with flour, baking soda and salt to creamed butter mixture. Add nuts last. Bake slowly in loaf pan for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
