Inexpensive Devil's Food Cake
1 cup sugar
4 tbsp. fat
1 cup boiling water
1 egg
6 tbsp. ground chocolate
1/2 tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
Boil chocolate and 1./2 cup water very slowly until creamy. Cool. Cream fat, add sugar and cream again. Beat egg yolks and add to creamed sugar and fat. Add chocolate to sugar. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with remaining 1/2 cup water. Beat thoroughly. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in 2 layers.
