VAN
BUREN COUNTY was established January 3, 1840 from the lands of Bledsoe,
Warren and White counties, and is located in Middle Tennessee. The county
is named for President Martin Van Buren, 1782-1862, eighth president of
the United States of America, 1837-1841. Spencer, the county seat,
is named for Thomas Sharp Spencer, one of the early long hunters who probably
scouted in the area of present Van Buren County. Spencer is about
sixty-five miles from the geographical center of the great state of Tennessee.
Zip Code: 38585 Population (1990): 3954 Location: 35.727871 N, 85.428661 W |

Freedom is not free. See their names on the Van Buren Memorial page where you will also see that more men died in the Civil War than all the other wars combined. | ||

| Fall Creek Falls is one of several equally beautiful falls located in Fall Creek Falls State Resort Park, one of the most spectacular recreation areas in America. The park is located in Bledsoe and Van Buren counties. | ||

Dear Cummings Cousins,
This morning when I sat down to write my check to the Farm Bureau the message came to me that I need to work on staying focused. Either that, or I received a subtle reminder from some gentle spirit that I am behind schedule with several tasks. The date that I absent-mindedly wrote on the check was Feb. 11, 1762. I immediately caught the error, experienced cold chills, and realized why I made the error. Today is Joseph Cummings' birthday. Happy 246th, GGG Grandpappy Joseph! Two cups of strong coffee and a reality check later I got Farm Bureau paid and all was back to normal - whatever that is.
The 2008 annual reunion of the Joseph Cummings Society will be the weekend of June 21. The location will be the old Burritt College Building in Spencer, Tennessee.
All folks who are in any way related to, or interested in the family of Revolutionary War Veteran and Tennessee Pioneer Joseph Cummings and/or his wife Rosannah Medley are encouraged to attend this reunion. It is an event dealing with history, genealogy, and fellowship, and is fun. With some possible exceptions during the World War II years, the 'Cummings Reunion' has been held annually since 1938 (or was it 1937?)
The doors will open at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, June 21, and will remain open as long as anyone cares to stay and chat about ancestors. Bring a covered dish to share with your cousins. Also bring your old photographs, family tree information, lap-top computer, copies of land grants, military records, and any other relics that you feel will be of interest for 'show and tell.'
We will be updating the keepsake 'Cummings Relics' CD and will have it available. [We ask a $20 donation to the Joseph Cummings Society for the updated CD, and we will be honored if you make lots of copies and give them to your family members.] Ours is a non-profit organization. Any proceeds from donations we receive are used for things like rental of the meeting place, paper plates, napkins, plastic forks, ...and, when your correspondent can get around to putting a newsletter together ... copies, stamps, envelopes, mailing labels, etc.
If you plan to stay a few days and check out the scenery and landmarks you might want to make reservations now. There are good motels in nearby towns Cookeville, McMinnville, and Sparta. There are cabins to rent at Rock Island State Park, and good lodging and dining at Fall Creek Falls State Park.
Also, as a matter of interest, I have accumulated as good bit of information on our Malachi Cummings (1791-1868) -who spent most of his life in Lawrence County, Indiana- ...with the intent of doing a feature on him in the newsletter. I surely would like to have a few more facts about what he was doing for those fifty-odd years that he was living in Lawrence County, but haven't yet made it up to Indiana to prowl through the Lawrence County public records. Has anybody checked to see if he was active in politics, ever appeared in court, or did anything else to draw attention to himself? If you have information on this Malachi (sometimes written 'Malachier'), please contact me.
I look forward to seeing you the weekend of June 21 in Spencer, Tennessee. Please reply by e-mail or give me a call if you have any questions.Regards,
Hoyte Cook
