GROSS, John (1904 - 1952)
Forestry Employee Instantly Killed When Struck By Car
A 48-year-old employee of the Tennessee Division of Forestry met instant death about midnight Saturday when he was struck by an automobile near his Viola Road Home. The death of John Gross was the only fatality reported in this area during the Christmas holidays. Another wreck Friday after noon on Sparta Road injured three local residents, one reported seriously. Mr. Gross, an employee of the forest fire fighting division of the state agency for the past three years, suffered multiple injuries of the head, body and limbs when he was struck by an automobile driven by Bruce McDonald, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. McDonald of Viola Road. The accident occurred near the crest of Locke Hill, located 5 miles southwest of McMinnville on Highway 108. Eye witnesses to the accident termed it unavoidable,State Highway Patrolman Tom Fugitt said. According to Patrolman Fugitt, who with Patrolman W. T. Sircey investigated the accident, Mr. Gross stepped from between a state truck and a jeep in which he dad been riding, into the path of the McDonald automobile, which was returning to Viola. The front-center of the McDonald car struck Mr. Gross and he suffered a fractured skull, broken neck, crushed chest and a broken leg, in addition to other injuries about the body, head and limbs. His death was described as instantaneous. According to the investigating officers, Mr. Gross was returning from fire fighting duty and had alighted from a jeep driven by James Johnson, of Altamont, another forestry employee, only moments before the accident occurred.
