LANKFORD, Levy    (1876-1953)

Blacksmith, Hit By Car Sunday, Dies Of Injuries
A colored blacksmith  - Levy Lankford  - became the third traffic fatality in three years on Beersheba street when he died Monday of injuries received when struck by a car on the thoro-fare the previous afternoon. The colored citizen suffered head and body injuries when he was hit by a car driven by a workman listed by officers as Charlotta Tucker, Peers street, about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The accident occurred near the inter- section of Fulkner and Beersheba streets.  Investigating officers quoted the woman as saying the colored man stepped in front of her vehicle and she was unable to avoid hitting him.  Following the death of the injured man at  Medical Clinic, Chief of Police Lon B. Parish issued a warrant for the alleged driver of the car, ordering her arrest on a charge of manslaughter. Preliminary hearing in the case has been set for Thursday in the Court of General Sessions. The death of the colored man marked the third fatal accident on Beersheba street within the past three years. Ed. Carwright, Fairview farmer, was struck by a car and killed on the street three years ago and Richard Prater, retired farmer, was killed when hit by a car on the same thorofare in late March. Chief Parish informed the Standard yesterday that the street has become the city's most dangerous thorofare and that officers are centralizing operations in the area now in an effort to halt the continuous operation of vehicles at high rates of speed that occur daily on the street.  He did not point out that the street is fast becoming known as the "McMinnville Speedway."   He asserted that any vehicle operator caught driving at excessive speed on the street, or any other city thorofare, could expect the full extent of the law with the heaviest fines possible for such traffic violations.  Prayer services for the traffic victim will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at East End Drive Church of Christ with funeral services at 4 p.m. at Silver Point. Calvin Dowell will officiate in the services and burial will be in Silver Point cemetery.  Lankford, a native of Putnam county, was born May 23, 1876. He had lived here for several  years and was well known as one of the few remaining blacksmiths in the county. he was a member of the Church of Christ.  He is survived by his wife, Alice Clay Lankford, McMinnville and two daughters Damie Johnson and Willa Mae Anderson, River Rough, Mich.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SERVICES WILL BE TODAY FOR JAMES D.L. LEWIS
McMinnville, Tenn., March 11 - Funeral services for James D.L. Lewis, 25-year-old farmer-trucker and Korean War veteran who burned to death when his truck crashed into an embankment Wednesday night near Hales Bar TVA Dam on Highway 41, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Methodist Church.  The Rev. W.B. Snipes, pastor of White Hall Presbyterian Church, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Lewis was returning to Viola from Atlanta with 12 tons of fertilizer for Bonner Supply Co., his father said  He had hauled a load of hay to Atlanta for the Viola firm.
Another trucker, first on the scene, said the brakes on Lewis' truck caught fire before the crash and the driver apparently headed the vehicle into the embankment to avoid crashing over a cliff over looking the TVA dam site and Tennessee River.
Lewis had been engaged in farming and trucking since his discharge from the Army in September, 1952.  He was a native of Viola, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Lewis.  He was educated at Viola School and Central High here.
He entered the Army in December, 1950, and received his basic training at Camp Breckenridge, Ky., before sailing for Korea in May, 1951.  He held the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal with one battle star and the UN Service Ribbon.  He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Lewis, James D. L. (Puck)
Coppinger, Theodore (Ted)

Drivers Killed In Truck Accidents On Highway 41
Two truck accidents, which paralleled each other in location and occurrence, took the lives of two Warren countians Wednesday night. Both occurred on Highway 41, near Jasper.
A Viola truck driver, James D. L. (Puck) Lewis, burned to death when his blazing tractor trailer rammed a cliff overlooking the TVA's Hale's Bar Power Plant about 7:30 p.m. and Theodore (Ted) Coppinger, Beersheba Road, died in a Bridgeport, Ala., hospital Friday at 7 p.m. of injuries received when he jumped from a runaway truck on a grade approaching the Marion county town about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Coppinger, who operates a grocery store on the Beersheba highway near the Grundy county line, was enroute to McDonald , Ga. with a load of lumber for Burroughs-Ross-Colville Company, his employer, when his truck went out of control on the steep grade approaching Jasper. He jumped from the truck , which crashed off the highway, and suffered serious head injuries in the leap.  Hubert Pendergraph, who was following Mr. Coppinger in another B-R-C truck, witnessed the accident and rushed the injured man to the hospital, where his injuries were reported "serious, but not critical" late Wednesday.
Mr. Lewis, a 25-year-old Korean War veteran, was trapped in the cab of his truck and perished in flames which destroyed the vehicle after it crashed into the mountainside.   Another trucker following Mr. Lewis' vehicle told investigating officers that the brakes on the Viola-bound Truck caught fire prior to the crash and it is presumed that the fatally-burned driver headed it into the cliff, rather than ride it in a plunge over the embankment which overlooks Tennessee river at the point of the accident.  The 12-ton load of fertilizer which Mr. Lewis was hauling from Atlanta, Ga., to Viola for Bonner Supply Company smashed into the cab of the truck in the wreck impact and electric torches were required to remove the man's body some two hours after the accident.  Mr. Lewis owned the tractor-trailer which he was driving. A report that a colored youth who accompanied Mr. Lewis on trips occasionally, was with him at the time of the accident proved false.
Mr. Coppinger was driving a B-R-C-owned "straight job" truck at the time of the accident which later claimed his life.  W.B. Whitson, president of the firm, said it was apparent that the brakes on the truck driven by Mr. Coppinger failed and he chose to jump from the vehicle rather than chance an impending crash. Both drivers were regarded as capable truck operators.
Mr. Lewis was a native of Warren county, born near Viola August 7, 1928. He was a son of Dudley Lewis and Lillie Mae Haston Lewis and he was educated at Viola school and Central high here.  Inducted into the Army in December 1950, the trucker received basic training with the 2nd Military Police Company a Camp Breckinridge, Ky., and he was assigned to overseas duty in Korea with the 5th Regimental Combat Team in May 1951. He was discharged in September 1952 and had been engaged in trucking and farming since that time.  He was a member of the Church of Christ.   Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Harold Benton Lewis, Viola; four sisters, Mrs. Ray Freeman, Attala, Ala., Mrs. John Kilby, Tracy City, Misses Betty Helen Lewis and Patty Jo Lewis, Viola. Funeral services for Mr. Lewis were held Friday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Rev. W.B. Snipes, minister of White Hall Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.
Mr. Coppinger, native of Grundy county, was born May 15, 1908. He was a son of Gilbert Coppinger and the Mrs. Martha Hobbs Coppinger and he was married to Miss Ezell Wannamaker in 1932. She survives.  In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by a son, Parker Coppinger, McMinnville; two daughters, Miss Jean Coppinger, Indianapolis, Ind., and Miss Margaret Coppinger, McMinnville; a brother, Willie Coppinger, McMinnville, and two sisters, Mrs Zada Belle Wannamaker and Mrs. Naomi Wannamaker, both of McMinnville.  Funeral rites were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Grundy county.  Rev. Burl Killian officiated and burial was in Philadelphia cemetery.
High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for the Lewis services and Putnam Funeral Home, Whitwell, was in charge of the Coppinger rites.
